Evaluating Mac Jones - ESPN
I'd be curious to see what Nix's numbers were. Mac's problem area in his limited sample size were quick throws inside 10 yards, which makes sense for a guy with limited game experience. He'll have to be better there next year to keep the job.

Jones: 26-for-44 (59%), 308 yards, 2 TD, 2 INT, 7.0 yds/att, 5.9 AY/A, 26.1 QBR

I went back and looked at the 14 passes he threw against Auburn and Tennessee -- defenses that finished the year ranked fifth and 19th in defensive SP+, respectively -- to see if there were any trends to the struggles. Of the eight incompletions he threw ...
- Two were well-defended by Auburn -- one was batted down at the line, and one was a slant swallowed up by a defensive back.
- Two were terribly underthrown, either because of miscommunication or simply poor footwork/execution.
- Two were well-thrown but dropped. A factor of small samples -- Bama pass-catchers weren't exactly prone to drops overall.
- One would have been completed had the receiver not slipped.
- One was the panic throw that flipped the Auburn game. Throwing from near the Auburn goal line in the third quarter, Jones was pressured the moment he got the snap. He threw at running back Najee Harris before Harris had turned to look for the ball, and Zakoby McClain collected it off Harris' back and took it 100 yards for a go-ahead score. Instead of going up by eight points, Alabama was suddenly down by six.
It's possible that Harris was supposed to look back for the ball sooner, but visually, this played out like some of the panicked basketball passes I made when full-court pressed in junior high.
Jones was far from blameless in this set of passes. There were footwork issues with a couple of throws, and he certainly needs more reps to get a better feel for pressure. But it bears mentioning that he threw a gorgeous red zone touchdown in the face of immediate pressure against Auburn too.
To the extent that Jones' poor numbers in this range were on him, they are far from unfixable. He'll begin the season with far less hype than either Ohio State's Fields or Clemson's Trevor Lawrence, but with Smith, Waddle, Harris and a veteran line all returning, there's no reason to think the Tide will have anything besides another top-five offense. And if incoming blue-chip freshman Bryce Young can beat out Jones, as some initially predicted when Young signed, then ... well ... Young is really, really good.

I think Mac is another one that is going to benefit greatly from the extra 2 weeks of practice time before fall camp.

Who’s the 4th? It will be one of LSU/Bama/Auburn as always.

With what A&M has returning along with their schedule, I think you have to include them as a possibility even if it's a small one.
Posted on 6/12/20 at 9:33 pm to TigerLunatik
Yea, if A&M takes care of business and goes into Tuscaloosa at 10-0 or 9-1 they are basically down to a 2 game season.
I don't think they are nearly as good as Alabama or LSU across the board, but their schedule breaks right and they have 10 games (most of which are easy) to tune up and gel together a veteran core with talented freshmen.

In his 5 games with significant playing time, Mac played 3 good defenses. Can’t blame the coaches for wanting to ease him in

The sample size could be argued as well. But our reasoning: we used 125 as the minimum because the average FBS team threw the ball 31 times per game last year. So we feel contributing to roughly 1/3 of the average FBS team’s regular season pass attempts is a solid cut off. Bowman and Jones barely qualified in our dataset.

I love looking at LSU’s 2019 passing stats!
I love listening to the morons that say we’re one and done even more.
What I love most is seeing our Evolution from
34% - 54% passing team knowing
LSU STILL HAD THE # 1 RB RUSHER IN THE SEC IN 2019 the KY guy a WR
We aren’t finished in our evolution to 60% passing game !
THE BEST IS YET TO COME!
Name the coach who said “We’re just getting started”
Joe Brady’s Plan was to get to 60% passing by Year TWO — He had to know he was leaving before he crafted that 64% Passing Attack vs Clemson
Brent Genitals Prolly still watches the film in disbelief

You can’t fix Stupid (poor decision making) or get Jones to master the 6 throws overnight (Jones has 4 of the 6 throws needed). Jones is not a Top 10 QB and won’t beat Top 10 teams consistently enough to keep his job or help his team win enough games to stay ranked at #3 and make the SECCG, much less the playoffs.
Get the net Gumps — With a # 40 SOS last year and Tua you could NOT BEAT A SINGLE TOP TEN TEAM They need a special stable to pile all of your horsecrap Clown George. This year your SOS is # 3 — Do you even have a clue how ludicrous your claims for Top 5 are after losing your Star QB.
Seriously, Bama is a 3-4 TD @$$beating if they miraculously meet OSU in 2020.
And Clemson can’t wait to 44-16 your sorry @$$es again! You need help George!!!
9-3 will be a good year for the Tide. Fire Cutty Sark and Pete Golden and hire some serious NFL help! Maybe in 2022 you can challenge for another SEC title.

He’ll begin the season as a Target with an overrated #3 AP ranking, and his failure in games vs Top 10 opponents will continue. There’s no magic Clown brush you can paint Mac Jones with and make him better.
# 40 SOS in 2019 to # 3 SOS in 2020
Get a load of what you are shoveling here!

Pure Flatulence! REALLY REALLY REALLY
This kid is a 1-2 year Project. That’s NFL analysts looking at it. Throw him in the big games and he’s gonna get mauled. Watch!

You realize that you are quoting "quotes" from a linked article, right? I didn't say any of those things. I linked an article that discusses the same sorts of things Warriors OP discussed. It's how a message board talking about football works - topic, discussion with various sources, etc.
Please learn how the internet works.
