If targeting is verified, the head coach has the option of either allowing the player to be ejected or give up points in exchange. I say 3 points if the difference is say less than 14 points. I would give up 7 points if the score difference is greater than 7 points. The reason I say this is because in the case of a blowout, a coach may not care giving up 3 points if the team is up by 3 TD’s.

Either way, the foul is recognized and the head coach of that player gets a way of keeping on the field if needed.

I think they should just use common sense - was it intentionally malicious? Yes - 15 yards and ejection.
No - 15 yards and no ejection.

Was it helmet to helmet but ticky tack?
Yes - no foul.

Would you have given up 3 points in the Miss State game to have your player start in the Bama game?

Simple yes or no...

Because if there's one thing people love, it's letting referees make judgement calls.

So once your team is up by a comfortable margin they can lay caution to the wind and light the other team the frick up?

sounds like a great plan.

It's always going to come down to judgement calls.

Whatever they do though, I think they need to dial back on all this targeting a bit.

That used to be the way it was done before and it was called a personal foul and a 15 yard penalty. It is a contact sport

Yeah but why should the currently winning team be able to break rules with less consequences than the team trying to come from behind?
