The runaway favorites in the SEC, the defending champion Crimson Tide could have one of their most explosive offenses in years with tons of depth at running back and receiver, led by Damien Harris. The question is: Who plays quarterback? Whether it's Tua Tagovailoa, Jalen Hurts or some combination of the two, Nick Saban's squad should put up points. The defense, however, could be a relative work in progress with four new starters in the secondary and already a major loss at linebacker (Terrell Lewis). But don't expect anyone to feel sorry for Saban's latest collection of five-stars. -- Alex Scarborough
2. Clemson
3. Ohio State

4. Georgia
The defense must replace Roquan Smith and others, but the Bulldogs' offense could take a big step forward this season. After a stellar freshman year, Jake Fromm is back at quarterback with a more experienced offensive line and weapons at running back (D'Andre Swift) and receiver (Terry Godwin). Add in QB Justin Fields, the No. 1 recruit from the 2018 class, and the Bulldogs have lots of options to help Kirby Smart in his quest to break the Nick Saban assistant curse. -- Scarborough
5. Washington
6. Wisconsin
7. Oklahoma
8. Penn State
9. Miami

10. Auburn
The Tigers return a 3,000-yard passer (Jarrett Stidham) and a loaded defensive line (see: Marlon Davidson, Derrick Brown, etc.). So what's not to like? The schedule. Not only does Auburn open the season against Washington, it ends the season with road trips to Georgia and Alabama. If the Tigers can somehow survive that, they're a playoff contender. -- Scarborough
11. Notre Dame
12. Michigan
13. Michigan State
14. Stanford
15. Virginia Tech
16. USCw

17. Mississippi State
Joe Moorhead might have the best season of any first-year coach in the SEC, including the man he's replacing, new Florida coach Dan Mullen. Not only does he inherit a dark-horse Heisman Trophy contender in quarterback Nick Fitzgerald, he gets a stacked defensive line with Jeffery Simmons and Montez Sweat. -- Scarborough
18. Florida State
19. Boise State
20. West Virginia
21. TCU
22. Texas
23. Oregon
24. UCF

25. South Carolina
The Gamecocks, not the Gators, could become the No. 1 challenger to Georgia in the SEC's East Division. Jake Bentley is back at quarterback, along with one of the best tandems of receivers in the conference, Bryan Edwards and Deebo Samuel. If the offensive and defensive lines can hold up, Will Muschamp's squad could make some noise. -- Scarborough

Auburn way too high. Just getting that statement out of the way. I know its coming.

Things that seem odd to me:
1) Michigan was mediocre last year, there is no reason for them to be this high, since they are replacing a QB and lost some D.
2) Oklahoma lost baker mayfield, and are going to be relying on the short, skinny erratic baseball player from aTm to run their offense. Not sure who their backup QB is, but they seem to high as well (though they should be best in big-12).
3) Va Tech has secondary issues. I like fuente as a coach but not sure their ranking is deserved either.
4) I'd put State in the 20s, but then bump them up a good bit IF we beat K-St in week 2.
5) Texas being ranked is a joke. They are going to have a QB controversy all season and their lines are mediocre at best. If they lose week 1 @ maryland the wheels will come off early. (Reminder, Maryland won at Texas last year).

Ohio State should fall out of the top-ten just on today's events alone.

Blueblood privileges. I want to see Texas earn it. But since they have that brand they will get the benefit. Just like Notre dame and others.

State too low. Miss State should be about 8 or 9 to start the season.

2017. Preseason 23, 7-6 finish and unranked
2016. Went from unranked to #11 after beating Notre Dame in week 1, 5-7 finish and unranked.
2013. Preseason 15, 8-5 finish and unranked
2012. Preseason 15, 9-4 finish, ended 19th
2010. Preseason 5, 5-7 finish and unranked

Which top-10 team is most likely to end the season unranked?
Adelson: Auburn. Stidham returns but there are questions up front as the Tigers have to rebuild their offensive line, and injuries at receiver have placed an emphasis on creating more depth. While the defensive line should be strong again, the secondary remains an unknown.
Aschoff: There's a chance that Auburn fans could spend yet another year complaining about Gus Malzahn -- especially after that sweet, sweet contract extension he just got. This Auburn team is really talented on both sides of the ball, but game against Washington, Mississippi State, Georgia and Alabama are all away from the Plains. Auburn has burned me in the past (hello, 2015), so when expectations are high, set the bar low.
Low: Auburn. The defensive line should be one of the best in the country, and Stidham should be much more comfortable in his second season on the Plains. The problem is the schedule. The Tigers have to face three preseason top-5 teams (Alabama, Georgia and Washington) away from home, not to mention No. 17 Mississippi State on the road.
Rittenberg: Auburn. There wasn't an obvious choice, but the loser of the Auburn-Washington season opener could be in trouble. All four Auburn losses in 2017 took place away from Jordan-Hare Stadium, and the Tigers must travel to face Washington, Mississippi State, Ole Miss, Georgia and Alabama this fall. This isn't a particularly deep offense outside of Stidham. While I love the defense, especially the front four, the Tigers figure to be in a lot of toss-up games.
Trotter: Not to pick on Auburn, but the Tigers probably have the most difficult schedule of any top-10 team, enhancing their chances of finishing the year unranked. Auburn plays No. 5 Washington in Atlanta, then has to go on the road to face No. 17 Mississippi State, No. 4 Georgia and No. 1 Alabama. Despite concerns along the offensive line, Auburn could be stout -- and yet, still finish with four or five losses because of the schedule.

quote:I agree, but them replacing their QB is addition by subtraction. Michigan only threw for 9 touchdowns last season. Shea Patterson is an upgrade over the QB carrousel from 2017.

Looks like Georgia might be moving up a spot.

I suppose Ohio St moves down a couple notches now?
