Had an interesting conversation with a former SEC football player

about players getting paid. He said that most of the money that players get from boosters or whomever, goes back home to their mother or grandmother for things like what we saw in the Tunsil text messages. He told me of a story about one player that got like $2500.00 after a big game back in 2000. He said the player sent $1500.00 back home with his mom and he kept $1000.00. I know it isn't right by the letter of the NCAA's law, but not all of these guys are tpos that blow through the money, some actually look out for their loved ones. It's not, nor it should be, a child's responsibility to take care of a household, but some circumstances are not in their control. I commend Tunsil for looking out for his mom, it is obvious his pos step dad wasn't.

Anyone upset with a player taking money has lost touch with reality and is too far gone in their fandom.
They aren't doing anything illegal. Who in their right mind would rather their family struggle to pay the bills and put food on the table, than to take perfectly legal money and risk being ineligible/sanctions for your school.
I could never blame the player for doing that.

no, it's not and this story doesn't change my opinion on anything in regards to them getting paid.
i'm not saying the players are bad people for accepting the money but in your scenario the parents are pos and it's still a form of cheating no matter how it's spun.

Well if I chose not to pay taxes and give that money to my mom that would be nice but not legal either.

Sweet, I know a former runner for Nevin Shapiro's agency that gave money to active SEC players.

I will say this: the system is rigged and inherently unfair. These guys are for the most part just not college material and as Saban said come from "disadvantaged backgrounds" They do however, have a unique talent that is worth millions of dollars to the market. However, they are precluded from realizing their market value immediately by the system in place. The NFL and the college powers have no interest in changing the status quo which serves them.

What makes it smart is paying off the family more than the kid. That has three benefits:
1. Kid doesn't flaunt money as much, which brings attention
2. Mom motivates kid to stay in program, which has a better ROI than a NSD signing bonus
3. Family members are not beholden to NCAA, which is a huge loophole

The person receiving a gift is never liable for taxes on it. And only gifts given by an individual of $13,000 or more are taxable to the giver. So no, not illegal.

I don't think many really blame the players, its the schools, NCAA and the boosters that are really at fault.

Tunsil's mom moved her entire family to from Georgia Oxford. Maybe his mom had some assistance affording that or maybe his mom is an idiot and bought a house outside her means.

Tunsil should have declined to play college football and gotten a job so he could take care of his Mom if he needed to or gone to the CFL

This is why I find it so interesting that these text have a assistant AD. It would just be so foolish to have an someone in the Athlicic Department when you could have just had the famous "Network" doing this. But we will see what all comes out.
