Just said on ESPNU XM Radio by Barrett Sallee. I think that descriptor matches him exactly.

Damn I didn't even realize he was coaching in Oklahoma this year. When did this happen?

That damn Bama Education. Koordinator

That’s how I’d describe him

That... actually isn't far from the truth.
I know this will infuriate some Auburn posters but Gus is a known commodity at this point. He will have a great year. He will have a bad year. He will have a lot of meh years. Spread that out over 5 or so years and then restart.
He is Houston Nutt 2.0.
Mediocre season, mediocre season, bad season, good season, mediocre season. He does just enough its hard to fire him unless he really steps on his pecker.
Which, I should add, is what finally got Nutt at Arkansas.

Sounds about right. Gus is meh.

Malzahn is probably a top 25 coach in the country and the seventh or eighth best coach in his own conference. He would have a much better reputation if he coached in the ACC or Big 12 or Pac 12 where the coaching isn't nearly as strong as it is in the SEC.

He's known as allegedly being an offensive guru, but he couldn't put a better offensive product on the field than that shitshow we saw yesterday...in eight years of being able to recruit the players he wants, with a conference championship and BCSCG appearance early on to draw recruits.
By comparison, Saban hasn't put that bad of an offensive product on the field since his first year in 2007.
I wouldn't even say he's the best OK coach.

Saban

Orgeron
Smart

You're probably right...depending on where Drink and Pittman end up.

That's how I've described him since 2015, that's why I've been on the hesitant side to fire gus, he's ok, not great, not terrible, if Urban Meyer for an example comes available fire him in a heartbeat, but mostly all I see are sideways hires.

You make a good point. People often assume the next guy will be better. They often aren't. And sometimes they're worse.

I don't see Gus ever having a 2012 type season or missing a bowl in a regular season. I also don't see him having a 2013 type season again.

Gus doesn't believe that garbage ...

Gus's best moments vs Saban and Alabama have been trickeration and going fast. He's never been able to line up and play conventional offense and beat Alabama. But he's caught Bama in a bad spot many a time by hurrying up and with new wrinkles/trick plays. So what does he do last night? Didn't go fast ever. Not one single series. Tried 2 reverses, one that worked ok and one that got smothered. Instead, does his best impression of Kentucky (apologies to Wildcat fans) and tries to run the ball, run the clock and just shorten the game. With his All Freshman SEC RB hobbled and a patchwork OL missing both starting tackles.
Was that his best chance to win or best chance to avoid an embarrassing beatdown? You make the call. I know which one I choose.

He did that in 2017.

Gus is the Eli Manning of college coaching.

Gus would be set at a place like NC State. He'd average 8-4, have a few 9-3 type seasons, a few 6-6/7-5 seasons but they'd never be awful. He'd stick around for 10 years and be the best or one of the best coaches in school history.
