Gus is betting on himself

For those asking, although I’m sure most don’t care what the real answer is.
He’s betting he can turn it around next year. That’s why he’d accept a reduced buyout. He doesn’t get the full contract if he’s bought out. He gets it if he stays.
Plus I’m guessing the guy wants to continue to coach at a big program. If he gets fired today, he goes back to a small school and has to work his way back up with no guarantee he ever makes it back.
You can call it a dumb bet. I’m just laying out the motivation behind it from Gus’ perspective

Good for him, he's still going to fail.

Shouldve gone to Arky
He'll probably have a good season next year (knowing auburn's bipolarity under him) and presto, new extension and job offers elsewhere

How can he recruit after this?
This was a terrible idea.

I don’t disagree.

So he lets himself be railroaded in a reduced buyout that does nothing to benefit him? So he's giving away money as a dare to himself?

It's not a dumb bet in the sense that the odds are just stacked against him (they are). It's dumb because this is a completely one sided deal. At a certain point you have to show a little backbone. Auburn wasn't going to fire him this year. He should have called their bluff. He gets next year either way to prove them wrong, but by accepting the reduced buyout, he's giving them permission to pay him less when they do fire him.

Kirby is killing Auburn with his recruiting in Georgia. The barn has to have elite players from Metro Atlanta and Kirby is locking down that state. AU is looking at 7-5 or 8-4 again in 2019 or worse if some of those elite Jr DL turn pro.

Did he actually agree to a reduced buyout or is this just rumors? Makes no sense for Gus unless he got something of value in return. Also makes no sense that AU allowed this to be public. It makes recruiting difficult when you publicly give your coach a vote of no confidence.

Maybe he's hoping Saban retires. And LSU, Georgia, and State all come down with butt cancer

If someone told me you can either stay employed because you really really believe in yourself, or I can cut you a check for $15 million right now, I would say I fricking suck and take the money, and so would any rational human being.

it will be used against him at every turn recruiting

Most people would, but not egomaniacs.

Makes no sense for Gus unless he got something of value in return.

You didn’t read it did you. If he doesn’t accept the reduced buyout, he’s fired today or at least that’s the threat being made. Gets the whole buyout but that’s only a portion of the contract.
If he’s confident in turning it around, then there’s no downside to accepting a reduced buyout. Because in his mind, he’s never going to get it.

I mean how official do you want?
It’s official enough for me and I’m not one for buying into rumors. There’s been independent confirmation outside of Auburn beat writers
