Greg Sankey on NIL: "We're not seeing NIL activity...we're seeing straight payments"

Alabama football head coach Nick Saban alleged that Texas A&M is paying its players. Meanwhile, Texas A&M head coach Jimbo Fisher has denied the claims, instead telling reporters to look into how Alabama runs its sport-dominating operation.
quote:
“There are some concerning trends,” Southeastern Conference Commissioner Greg Sankey told Yahoo Finance. “We're not seeing name image and likeness activity — we're seeing just straight payments. And I think it's important that we recenter ourselves on what's supposed to be happening here and the desire to keep that activity out of recruitment to benefit young people economically but to do so in a healthy way.”
quote:
The public display of displeasure with NIL policies comes as collectives, often organized by wealthy university donors, have taken over the NIL industry with direct payments to players regardless of what their name, image and likeness is worth.
A Miami player recently signed a $800,000 deal around the time he transferred. ESPN reported a Boston College receiver was flashed six-figure deals to entice him to transfer. If either offer was made prior to the decision to transfer, it would be a direct violation of NCAA policies.
quote:
Sankey told Yahoo Finance he doesn’t believe the NCAA alone can solve the problem. He and coaches like Saban have instead called on Congress to develop broad rules.
“We've been clear about the need for a national standard and that you're going to have congressional activity,” Sankey said.

One glaring thing comes out of this article. Texas A&M and Jimbo are finished. As suspected Saban is running the SEC not Sankey. Sankey got his marching orders from Saban because not until just now has Sankey said anything about all of this. Now when he does his statements pretty much line up perfectly with what Nick said.

Sure, let's get Washington involved. What could go wrong?
Washington will pass legislation, the problem won't get fixed, the game we love will become even less recognizable, and lawmakers are going to line their pockets even more...

They put the cart before the horse and now they're trying g to reign it back in. They're going to have to make an example out of someone. I vote aTm and Bama.

Then Sankey needs to grow a sack and kick A&M out of the conference or call for a vote amongst other SEC ADs to determine if the conference still wants them as a member.
SEC membership is a privilege…not a legal right. People have always argued that the NCAA can’t enforce rules related to NIL. While true, SEC membership is altogether different.
The threshold of SEC membership should be higher than just not breaking any laws.
Sankey is saying that he knows the there is currently not a level playing field in the conference. And, A&M is creating unprecedented division amongst member coaches to the point of embarrassing the league.
They have always been a renegade program. Kick them out. Adios SEC TV contract revenue. Good luck playing Iowa State, Texas Tech, etc. again because Texas and OU are now SEC bound.
Those fools would be on an island of misfit programs…where they belong.

Hang on.
Is he basically saying Saban was right? That’s how I’m reading it.
You think Jimbo is going to ask anyone to slap Sankey?

As much of a shite show that the NCAA can be at times, they knew exactly how this was going to play out and were just waiting for it to blow up. It will be nice to see this out of control situation get better when the NCAA and Congress get involved.

Keep your employees happy and pay them well enough to stick around. Welcome to real life, college football.

Well if you want the surest path to making things worse, here it is.

I don’t think it’s just Saban. Brian Kelly voiced his displeasure as well. Just because Saban said something publicly doesn’t he is the only one. In fact, I would believe that mist of the SEC ADs and Head Coaches have already spoken about it.

Nothing will happen to Bama when Saban is still coaching there.

Saban is rarely wrong, he just spoke out of turn but it was the truth. I don't know of anyone that thinks tAm is above board. They may have acted the way they thought they should at the time but the intentions were to buy players which will ALWAYS be against the rules and common sense.

That was my take away when I read it as well.

The problem with NIL is you basically opened the doors for the Texas schools to make asses out of themselves, and that’s exactly what happened.
Now they’ll have to reign in the entire system because schools like UT and A&M are so desperate for any success they’ll go bankrupt to buy a title.

Except that the NCAA is a complete joke that rarely enforces anything or gets anything of significance accomplished. So I don't have any faith in them to get anything under control with this pandora's box that they have opened up.

There is nothing new under the sun.....
1 Timothy 6:10
For the love of money is the root of all evil: which while some coveted after, they have erred from the faith, and pierced themselves through with many sorrows.
Money corrupts.

A&M can now fire Dumbo Fisher without having to pay him for the remainder of his contract. This would actually be good for them. They were insane to give an average coach guaranteed money.
