Greg McElroy: Jamie Newman way more talented than Mac Jones, has 'top-five pick upside'

Georgia fans are dying for Kirby Smart’s program to finally dethrone Alabama and looking ahead to the Sept. 19 showdown between the Bulldogs and Alabama in Tuscaloosa, ESPN college football analyst Greg McElroy believes UGA has a major advantage in one key aspect of that game.
When it comes to which team has the edge at the game’s most important position, McElroy doesn’t believe there’s much of a discussion comparing Jamie Newman and Mac Jones entering the 2020 season.
Here’s what the ESPN analyst had to say during a recent appearance on Atlanta-based sports radio program “Xtra 1063” this week:quote:
“I think Newman’s way more talented. I mean, I don’t even think it’s really, I don’t think it’s really comparable just given Jamie Newman’s upside. I mean, guys, we’re talking top-five pick upside here. I mean, he has that kind of upside — he’s ridiculous,” McElroy said on the show. “There are some nuances to his game that he needs to learn, but just as far as talent is concerned, there’s not many out there and college football like him.
“He’s extremely accurate, big arm, needs to learn how to layer the football a little more. Mac Jones is a solid player as well and performed, like I said, very admirably but I think part of the reason why everyone will feel real good about him is the fact that he’s surrounded by an all-star team in a lot of ways.”
Those are some bold comments for a player that’s not taken a single snap in the SEC but given the amount of talent that will be surrounding Newman in Athens this fall, he’ll have every opportunity to show his best football is in front of him this season playing in a Bulldog uniform after starting several seasons for a Wake Forest program that could never match up in terms of overall talent with the powers in the ACC.

Sigh I really hope he is as good as he is hyped....he was awful vs Clemson. Only time I've watched him

Wtf does McElroy know about evaluating QBs? He said he was a better pro prospect than Cam Newton

Jamie Newman is not even the best transfer QB in the conference this year.

I'm curious to see how they use him in this new offense.

Oh no. I guess our 4-star starter who just destroyed Michigan and our generational 5-Star true freshman backup just can’t compare to a Wake Forrest transfer. Not to mention the fact they will be throwing to scrubs like D. Smith and Waddle. Our offense is truly going to be outmatched by that great Georgia offensive tradition.

LOL I was about to say - this is interesting considering his previous take on a somewhat similar QB comparison involving himself.

I don’t understand the hype. He had mediocre stats in a bad ACC conference. If it because Wake Forest had bad talent around him? Wouldn’t that be negated by the significantly better defenses he’ll see in the SEC?

Newman will likely be the worst QB in SEC history. I see us going 3-9 with him.

In WFs last 7 games (where WF went 2-5), Jamie Newman averaged 192 yards, 1.7 TDs, and 1.1 interceptions.
He'll set the world on fire

Just imagine letting Greg McElroy rustle your jimmy this bad.

Maybe so, but Mac Jones was no 4 star QB. A 0.8815 3 star on 247 sports. Maybe rivals or whatever? LOL and these star ratings.

Mac Jones will be drafted higher then Jamie Newman.

This sounds like some Saban psy-ops. He’s instructed McElroy to begin deploying the rat poison on Georgia.

I get that the talent around him at WF was bad but was it that bad?
I’m not saying Newman isn’t better than Mac Jones but I’m just astonished by the hype he’s getting.

Sooner or later Georgieee is going to beat Alabama. It happened to LSU so it can happen to the Dawgs.

No, it wouldn’t. He will be playing with a talent differential adv for uga, which he didn’t do at wake.
