Lsu 2012 think was 1 preseason. Then lost honey badger. Finished outside top 10 after they let Clemson get a miracle win in the peach bowl on nye.

You are incorrect. USC was #1 and Alabama was #2 going into 2012.

2000 Alabama started out #3 and finished 3-8.
I know they weren’t #1 but it’s still fun to think about.

I think it was 06 when VOLS started out #6 and finished 6-6.
Was the first nail in Fulmer’s coffin.

Tbh, I’m surprised UGA finished that high. Seemed like that team fell off a cliff after the win in Death Valley.

Yeah, we had no business being ranked that high, we had lost the major portion of our starters off the 83 team. The media just put us #1 to try and make up for us getting screwed out of a title (or at least a split) in 83, and also to try and hype up our game versus Miami to start the season.

We weren't #1 nationally but I think LSU was the preseason SEC pick in 1998. Started 3-0... then finished 4-7 after losing every close game in the most gutwrenching ways possible it seemed. Lou fricking Tepper. Might have been the best 4-7 team ever.

We were #6 I think. Averaged 30+ ppg and one of the best offenses in school history but couldn't stop anyone. I'll never forget Tepper repeatedly matching up a LB on Champ Bailey and never adjusting.

Our preseason top ten, 4-7 1989 team was better than that team.

Yeah Quincy Carter and Champ Bailey really exposed how poor of a fit Tepper's scheme was for the SEC. I was at the UK game where Tim Couch, Craig Yeast, etc. just shredded us.
Should've won the West easily after coming so close in 96 and 97

Not old enough to remember that one, but looking back it seems bizarre that Archer and DiNardo good fired for back to back losing seasons after they actually had prior success, but Curley Hallman got to follow his two years of suck with two more years of suck. Dude must've had compromising photos of Joe Dean

A current SEC HC took the #1 USC Trojans from preseason #1 to losing to Georgia Tech in the Sun Bowl to finish 6-7 and unranked
