How in the hell did UTEP and Wyoming win one? The Hogs, Gators, and Kentucky are the three SEC teams with a natty in basketball.

Yep
Guess some don't realize it because UTEP was called Texas Western College back then

Wasn’t Nolan Richardson on that team?

I know he graduated from UTEP, but if he was there then, I forgot the story/context behind him being there.

Pretty good flick.
Also features the winningest NCAA coach of all time...Jon Voight, with 1,199 wins...876 in basketball, 323 in football.

I’m wondering if great teams chose to play in the NIT instead back in the day.

Holy Cross and North Carolina need to hire different logo makers.

One thing I hated about Baylor winning last night. UTEP was the only Texas school with a basketball natty for over 50 years.

What is the one with the L and also what is the one between LaSalle and Holy Cross?

An elite club indeed. Would be good to get a couple more SEC schools on there.

They didn't choose to instead, but there were many great teams in the NIT because only conference champions got in the NCAA. And there weren't nearly as many conferences. In 1952 there were only 16 teams. As recently as 1974 there were only 25 teams in.
Here were the 25 teams in the NCAA tournament in 1974:
Furman, NC State, Penn, Pitt, Providence, S. Carolina, St. Josephs, Austin Peay, Marquette, Michigan, Notre Dame, Ohio, Vandy, Creighton, Kansas, Louisville, Oral Roberts, Syracuse, Texas, Cal State LA, Dayton, Idaho State, N. Mexico, USF, UCLA.
Who's missing? All the conference 2nd place teams, for starters.
People comment disparagingly about Alabama winning football championships without winning their division. How about winning a basketball national championship while coming in 9th in your conference? People would have loved it if Michigan State had made that kind of run.
