Famous Hemingway line about bankruptcy very apropos right now about college football.

The sport has been changing and evolving really since the beginning of the BCS, the last big round of re-alignment and especially since the initiation of the playoffs. We’ve seen the gradual shift in opinions about player compensation and the arrival of player opt-outs and widespread transfers.

But the past 6 months with the arrival of NIL and now super conferences herald the sudden part of the equation. College football with nationwide traditions, historical rivalries and regional idiosyncrasies will be gone forever to be replaced by a more corporatized, homogenized and professionalized commodity that will be packaged and delivered to maximize revenues at the expense of all other considerations.

Morally this is probably the correct thing to do for the players. They are the ones paying the physical burdens and so they deserve fair treatment.

But make no mistake the college football those of us old enough to enjoy the 90s and early 2000s is gone forever.

I can’t help but think we will probably get what we are asking for. But then we might not like what we get.

What about the players from the 40,50,60,70,80's.

Why did this become a problem?

Don't worry. The Big 10 will also add teams to form a super conference. You will be in the new look CFP, and still play Michigan every year. All will be OK. Well, can't guarantee you the Rose Bowl doesn't change (date, time, teams, etc.).

Good question.

I think college football wasn’t quite as lucrative back then without these huge tv contracts, merchandising deals etc.

The perceived unfairness arose when the players weren’t able to wet their beaks too

Players got room, board, stipend, education, travel, meals, etc all paid. Not sure why people think they weren't making money previously.

Long long time ago the rosters were 75% white but today we're reversed. It and education not good enough todays rosters? Maybe not.

I actually enjoy playing ball state in an early season blowout. I have always enjoyed watching academy triple option teams giving Oklahoma or notre dame fits. I like gimmicky teams like boise state or Hawaii coming out of nowhere to make a bigger bowl game.

Not sure these things still happen or even remotely matter anymore

It really doesn’t matter at this point. We can argue about the compensatory value of a scholarship to a major university but at this point it’s a fait accompli.

They are getting paid

No doubt. 75% on the roster are their to get to the NFL anyway so best of luck to them while they have to attend a class.

To first quote bullshite. These players have been coddled for years and they spend all the stipends instead of being smart with money and complain it aint' enough.

The second post true. Most of these young black players are echoing what their leaders and the media has been shoving down their throats for years. White Amercia is the problem not the fact that you don't care about your education and would rather live the street life and act like thugs and be part of a counter culture that hates America even though that country is giving you an oppportunity to succeed. Notice I did say most, some get it.

This is what happens when you have an organization like the NCAA. They could have mandated some kind of stipend for college athletes years ago. For example, every player received $1K, $2K, etc.. per month. They continued to give it the occasional lip service but did nothing.

This is what happens when you do nothing at all. Total chaos and a free for all. Now the bigger schools in the bigger cities with bigger and richer alumni can effectively "buy players". Call it what you want but players coming out of high school will now be considering how much they can make at school X vs school Y.

That's what I would do. Don't blame them at all. NCAA is an inept and outdated organization. This mess is on them.

Absolutely agree. This is entirely the fault of the NCAA. They failed to protect their most valuable commodity by evolving and changing with the times. It’s shameful.

The NCAA is the member schools. The fault of this stupid mess is the fault of the member schools, especially the big schools: tOSU, Michigan, Tamu, Bama, OU, Nebraska et al.

Collectively they killed college football in pursuit of money.

My daughter ran track Division III. She got nothing outside an academic scholarship but she was allowed to work. I will say I would have loved a free ride for her. It would have saved a hell of a lot of money.

The NCAAA got lazy and didn't want to monitor if jobs were legitimate so they banned Division I from working.

So once again the NCAA is the cause of its own destruction.

Doesn't help to watch them rake in millions while athletes suffer career ending injuries. They could have insured all athletes, but no.

You failed to include Texas, dbag.

None of the other schools you mentioned have also had the distinct honor of killing their conference as well.

It’s a unique brand of hubris and incompetence in Austin

"They" are not concerned with what the classic football fan wants. Our economy is based on expansion and growth. They already count the classic football fan as a given. Whoever they lose, they expect to make up for it with the "pro" football fan who doesn't care much for the college game anyways (read: western football fans). They know they have you. They want more and figure they'll get it.

I think the Texas complicity is well-documented. People don’t realize Nebraska, Mizzou, and OU blocked equal revenue sharing and a Big 12 network.

If those schools wanted to be in the B12, they would be in the B12.

The Big 10 poached schools from two conferences thus leading to this mess. Big 10 is evil

Is it healthy for the sport to have the same 4 teams win the Chip every year? Is it good for the sport to have a failed NFL coach stack the two deep with 5* players by paying them, while the rest of the field tries to play the rules?
