I had 2 kolaches this morning and a coffee and pondered about how as a kid i thought it was better to have the new fence built with the supports on my side of the fence so i could use them as a ladder but my dad thought it more aesthetically pleasing to have it the flush sides facing inwards.

If it makes you feel any better depending on how close the fence is to someone elses property you legally have to put the fence the way you wanted if it is to remain your fence. At least in Missouri.
