The Pioneer Predictor Has UAB Winning by 7.

BIRMINGHAM – The UAB men's basketball team will kick off its 2018-19 season on Thursday, October 18, at 7 p.m. when it welcomes the University of Georgia to Bartow Arena as part of the Hoops Season Tipoff Event presented by the UAB Bookstore.

The contest will serve as the Blazers' first exhibition game of the 2018-19 season ahead of their final tune-up against Morehouse College. It will be the first time since the 2011-12 season that UAB has played two exhibition games to open a season.

Proceeds from the game will be donated to the American Red Cross in support of disaster relief efforts.

UAB is coming off a 20-13 season, its third 20-win season in the last four years and the sixth in the past 10.

Crean was named the Bulldogs' head coach on March 15. He brings to Athens 18 seasons of success at Marquette and Indiana. Crean, a two-time National Coach of the Year, has led 13 teams to postseason competition, including nine NCAA Tournament bids and a trip to the 2003 Final Four.

"In playing at UAB, we really hope to get a sense of how we compete and handle the potential adversities that come from playing on the road in a different environment," Crean said. "There will be so many situations and opportunities that come up in the game and for us to go through and grow through those will really help the rest of our preseason and hopefully somewhere down the line."

Georgia returns three starters – seniors William "Turtle" Jackson and Derek Ogbeide and sophomore Rayshaun Hammonds – and 11 total letterwinners from last year's team, which finished 18-15. The Bulldogs' roster also features five freshmen.

I’m looking forward to the Crean era. I don’t think they’ll be very good this year but he’s engaged with the fans and University, unlike Fox. Claxton and Hammonds have impressed Crean but our guard play sucks.

I couldnt be more thrilled to have crean but it's gonna take a few years. I expect our on court play to be exponentially better than it was with fox but might not necessarily have an improved record this league is just so tough.

Fox was reluctant to engage Atlanta AAU coaches but Crean has already began building those relationships. I think exposing the pay for play will allow more teams to actually recruit the best.

Not trying to take any shots, but if Auburn can recruit and win basketball games, I think there is hope for a school that faces Atlanta.

it took bruce 4 years to build the program and the fbi to get rid of the AD's mandated assistant coach that was a cancer to the program....crean will do fine, be patient and remember that your program was nowhere near the dumpster fire that ours was in....

UGA has been stuck in medocrity for over a decade. To a certain degree, UGA has been a dumpster fire. Obviously different circumstances than Auburn.

After the Dawgs start 6-0, we’re all going to start acting like we are on par with Kentucky.

All kidding aside, basketball will be interesting again.

Coach Crean is a damn good coach. Despite what a lot of people think, he is a good X and O coach.

He has struggled with in game coaching at times, but who doesn't.

His teams play fast, score a lot and at times they turn it over a lot due to playing so fast. He'll have the dawgs dancing in due time.

Crean coming here would be like Richt going to Maryland or Virginia or something. You hear nothing but trash spewed from Indiana people who hate him but it's because they had expectations of final 4s every year so simply making the tourney wasn't good enough there. If he does that here he'll be a savior.

What I love so far is he is the antithesis of fox in every way. He's engaging as all get out and simply exudes energy and passion. He promotes the program and engages the fans at every single turn and any opportunity he gets. He's said our emphasis will be offense, up tempo, and shooting 3s. Literally the exactly opposite of what fox did. Again it's gonna take some time to really get things going HIS way, so I do expect a couple lean years to start, but man I'm pumped about the future of the program. Fox had us like the Hawks, not dreadfully awful but not good enough to make any real noise. Just kind of in the purgatory of being "pretty good" most of the time and tha'ts all.

Crean is a complete opposite of Fox. He brings energy, tempo and has engaged with the fans of UGA. I like where we are heading. Dare I say it is similar to Kirby Smart being hired.

Tough call but I think UGA wins late in the 4th.
