Former West Virginia cornerback Tykee Smith announced Sunday he will be joining the Georgia program.

In 10 games as a sophomore, Smith racked up 61 total tackles and eight tackles for loss while breaking up five passes and intercepting two. He helped the Mountaineers field the nation's No. 1 pass defense in yards-per-game average and No. 10 pass defense in yards averaged per pass attempt.

When the season ended, Smith was honored as a third-team All American by the Associated Press. He was a member of the All Big 12 honorable mention team. He played the last two seasons for Georgia defensive backs coach Jahmile Addae.

Smart lured Addae away from his alma mater in January to fill the defensive backs coach vacancy at UGA after Charlton Warren left to become the defensive coordinator at Indiana. Addae spent two years at WVU after a season at Minnesota.

According to Pro Football Focus, Smith finished with an overall grade of 83.2 and a coverage grade of 90.0.

There’s more.

Smith allowed 25 catches on 38 targets for just 110 yards, with two interceptions, three pass breakups, and a 56.3 passer rating. He committed zero penalties.

Georgia has never lacked the “pieces”, they just lack the balls.

I read he specializes in slot coverage.

Smith has been one of the best slot defenders in college football this year while serving as the “spear” in the West Virginia defense. The West Virginia defensive back ranks first in PFF coverage grade among all FBS defensive backs with at least 100 snaps in the slot.

Smith saw at least three targets in all nine of his starts, yet he managed to allow under 30 yards in every one of his games this year.

He's probably going to play Star for us. Happy to have him since I thought he was leaning towards PSU.

Why would we need that when we have the qb returning with the highest ypp.

That might be funny if JT didn't torch everyone he played against

Not exactly... He was 4-5 at USC then got hurt and then got beat out. His TD/int ratio was poor. He did ok for GA after Bennett got hurt but why couldn’t he beat him out straight away?

What I’m saying is... he may be the real deal, but there are some questions about JT that need some big league answers as yet. Going 4-0 at end of season was good... but it was against State (playing with 48 players), USCe, Missouri, and Cinnci in bowl... not the toughest schedule.

He never got beat out. He transferred while he was still recovering.

Exactly. Saban could take their roster and win a national championship

So you're saying the greatest coach of all time is better than Kirby? Seems sketch.

Not that it matters considering how well he played, but His knee wasn’t ready for sec fb to start the season.

Now back to dbs.....
