Was listening to a podcast the other day on youtube. (Maybe on3 but cant remember) and the guy was comparing Kirby to Saban. Saying how great Kirby has been and if he could even surpass Saban. The other responded with I don't know if Kirby wants to be doing this as long as Saban in order to reach his level of accomplishment. He said he heard Kirby may pack it in a lot sooner than most would think. Any truth to this or was the guy talking out of his arse. Seems to me if Georgia continues to roll it would be hard for him to walk away. I dont think he met anytime soon but basically alluded to Kirby wanting to retire alot younger than most.

It would depend on the burnout factor.

Kirby has been one the outspoken coaches on the mental health and physical health toll that coaching has on people, mostly in response to Matt Luke hanging up his hat for good.

As a fan, I hope he sticks around forever. But once you've accomplished a handful a championships and cemented yourself in the hall of fame, and you are sitting on tens of millions of dollars, and can still get media gigs or consulting gigs or speaking engagements to stay relevent to feed ego or just have something to do besides watching Judge Judy on the sofa all day, why not retire?

But there's also something different about head coaches at that level. They need the game. They love it, they need it, Saban is one of those. What in the world would Saban do with all of his free time if he just retired? He'd be miserable. Maybe Kirby is cut from the some cloth, maybe not.

Kirby definitely wants to coach for a long time; however, as the game and times change, certain factors could certainly lead him to retire at a younger age than Saban is now. Who knows.

ETA: When Kirby retires, it'll be while he's at UGA. He's not going anywhere, including to the pros.

I bet he retires at 60. You can't go at it that hard forever

Yeah i get it. Everybody is motivated differently and especially when money is no longer an issue (which he is set for life now) i could definelty see him wanting to enjoy himself. I was just curious where this guy got this from if Kirby had said something but that interview makes sense.

That would be 13 years from now.

Good thread.

We need more of these on here as opposed to the flame threads of a certain UGA QB started by losers.

I knew this was coming. He’s too young for you guys to openly hope he retires or dies so this is what you have left.

Not it at all man. Read my post. I thought the guy was full of shite and talking out his arse. Just wondering if kirby had said something to give him that idea.

It's probably based on his comments following Matt Luke's retirement. At the time, people wondered if he had cancer or this or that or was he fired, or did he have a scandal of some sort, so Kirby cleared the air really quick by explaining it as simple burnout and wanting to spend time with wife and kids as being an overlooked and legitimate reason to walk away, especially when Ole Miss has already paid you millions to walk away. So the podcaster you were listening to was probably citing those series of comments about Matt Luke and then applying them to Kirby himself.

I have heard that he could retire within 5-10 years, but that is coming from extremely secondary sources. I don’t think he’s coaching into his late 60s, though.

It’s certainly a legit question.

I expect 10 more seasons, so hopefully 5 more titles from 23-32.

I think Kirby gives it another 10 years and retires about the time his kids are hitting the end of college. He is such a workaholic that eventually he’s going to hve to throttle down if he has any desire to enjoy life outside the football facility (which it seems like he does eventually want to do).

I think that'll become the new norm, as salaries continue launching into the absurdosphere while knowing they can be fired anytime the right boosters don't think they're groveling enough to recruit the right teenaged boys.

There will always be some lifelong Bro-Bro-Bro's like Dana Holgerson who don't give a shite about anything but being a coach and going out with the boys, but for people who want a normal family life, or have too much dignity to go courting teenage boys their whole life, there will probably be more career changes once they get those fatass buyouts.

They can go into other careers outside of sports too. When Houston stupidly & pre-emptively fired Tony Levine, he did 2 more years on the carousel before quitting coaching to become a Chick-Fil-A franchisee and seems pretty happy now.

Why the question? Could it not be asked of every coach?

I don't think Kirby would leave for another coaching job at any level.

But I have no clue how long he'll feel like doing this. I don't think he'll be done in the next 10 years. But 20? Maybe not.

Athletic Director Kirby Smart will pick a great successor in Athens after his 20th season as Head Coach.

Kirby has also mentioned some players and coaches that have stepped away from the game for periods when they had mental or emotional issues they needed to address.
