Former Missouri football coach Gary Pinkel is again receiving treatment for non-Hodgkin lymphoma after his cancer came out of remission, he told ABC 17 on Sunday.
Pinkel, 67, was first diagnosed with the disease in May 2015 and retired after the season that fall. He said a year later that the cancer was in remission, but it now requires treatment once more.
"I'm doing good. I had to get treatment again for the first time in four years. My cancer came out of remission, and so I had treatment last month. I'm doing fine," Pinkel said Sunday. "With my type of lymphoma, you'll never be healed. But that's kind of why I retired when I did -- I just wanted to not go back and regret working 85 hours a week, 35 weeks out of the year when I could be doing other things with my family and my eight grandkids."

Pinkel coached Missouri to 10 bowl appearances in 15 years and led the team during the school's move from the Big 12 to the SEC in 2012.
"You keep battling it. I'm going to battle it," Pinkel said. "I've got a very positive approach to it, and I'm around a lot of good people that are helping me. There's a lot of people out there with a lot worse cancers than Gary Pinkel has, and so prayers to all of them."

100%.

Makes those that said it was due to the SJW look like fools.

Mizzou will always love Pinkel.

Pinkel was one of the most likable coaches in the SEC in recent memory.

I hate to see him go through this and hated to see him leave coaching, but he absolutely has his priorities straight.

I would do the exact same.

Your family is more important.

When he came to LR for the Broyles award ceremony, I listened to his interview, he was and is a class act. Hope he beats this and prayers for him.../

Very humble and low key. A very good coach. He put Missouri football back on a respectable stage. He had a couple national championship-caliber like seasons. Overall, he did it his way. Wish him nothing but the best. He’s clearly a Big XII legend, and definitely put his mark early on in the SEC.

Get better GP!!!!!

Noting but good wishes for Gary Pinkel. The guy had our number back in the BDF and then in the early times of the SEC.

My prayer is that he whips this cancer as bad as he defeated us.

Prays for you and your family Gary Pinkel.

I came here to post that, but figured the Mizzou folks would beat me to it.

F Cancer. I've lost too many that were close to me from it.

You hate to hear that. Very classy by Pinkel to say there are people fighting much worse cancers then him and his prayers are with them. I hope he whips this thing's arse and gets to enjoy his golden years watching his grandkids grow up.

Wish him all the best. 2015 wasn’t his finest hour, but it’s not legacy tarnishing. He deserves a statue in front of Faurot for what he did for the program.

I'm sorry but I don't agree 100%.

Learning what he was going through medically and to still be able to back up his players like they are his kids and support them(regardless if you agree with them or not) shows what kind of unbelievable man Gary Pinkel was.

He didnt see his players as football players. He saw them as his kids.
