Hard not to see the timing of him checking out a week after Lane's shenanigans. He just couldn't even.

(I figure we are blaming Lane for everything for a while. Might as well make use of it.)

Roy Kramer is quite possibly the individual most responsible for the SEC's rise to dominance in football starting in the 2000's. His vision for the conference, including the conference championship game and expansion to 12 teams, set the bar for the rest of the country and forced all of them to follow suit. I'm old enough to remember the Big 10 and Pac 10 and everyone bitching that the SEC had an unfair advantage because of their Conference Championship Game. Well, I'm sorry Notre Dame didn't want to join a conference and the other conference wanted to focus on men's volleyball. Everyone else was forced to follow the SEC.

My guess is that Roy saw what the Big East had accomplished focusing in on the TV aspect of Men's Basketball and realized he could do bigger, better things with Football in the Southeast. He was smart enough to know not to stay fixated on one damned school (like the Big 10 was with Notre Dame) and when it became clear that the University of Miami and Texas A&M, who were the original targets for expansion in the late 1980's, weren't going to make it, he smartly helped to change focus to other viable options. This includes my school, the University of South Carolina.

He was a damned good football coach, too, winning a national championship at the Div. 1-AA level with flippin' Central Michigan of all places and he probably could have become a legend as a coach had he not had greater plans.

Last of all he was a veteran, fighting in the Korean War. Dude served his country in a time of war.

RIP Roy. This Gamecock thanks you for your service.

He actually got the idea from a g5 conference, Mac I believe and had the foresight to see it’d be a money maker at p5 level. He later admitted he had no idea it would lead to this. He also said it was damn close to not happening at all. Ads hated it. After unc Clem were invited Clem said yes. Unc said no. So they scrapped Clem(he said he wouldn’t go into detail why Clem invite was pulled) and approached atm fsu. Fsu said no and they asked Miami. Miami also said no and atm also decided it wasn’t for them. The ads felt like he was turning the sec into a laughing stock. Bc everyone was rejecting the sec invite. But against their will he convinced them to ask two more schools. If they said no expansion was off the table. Arky and usce said yes. It’d be interesting to see where we’d be if arky or usce said no. Cf would look very different
