“Unfortunate” you believe this is justified.

Carlton Davis apologizes for derogatory word in tweets
quote:

After using a derogatory term for people of Asian descent in tweets on Sunday, Tampa Bay Buccaneers cornerback Carlton Davis apologized, saying he meant no offense. Davis said he knew the word only as a slang term for lame and did not know it had another meaning.

The former Auburn standout said now that he knew, he would not use the word again.

The word appeared in tweets that have been deleted.

Davis issued a statement about them via his Twitter account, accompanied by an entry from a slang dictionary showing the definition of the word as he meant it.

“I would never offend any group of people,” Davis wrote. “You reporters can look for another story to blow up. The term was directed towards a producer claiming he ‘ran Miami.’ With that being said, I’ll retire that word from my vocabulary given the hard times our Asian family are enduring.

“I used a term that from where I come from has always meant ‘lame,’ but I did not realize it has a much darker, negative connotation. I have learned a valuable lesson and want to apologize to anyone that was offended by seeing that word because we need to focus on helping each other during these tough times.”

I wonder if thought it meant "goon" or similar

Otherwise, if recent news stories are an indication, he might want to pick on a different demographic for causing trouble in Miami

Never heard it as anything other than derogatory, specifically with US soldiers against Koreans and Vietnamese.

That said, he may not be bullshitting on his intended use of the word. Although, I do not believe he did not know the word had a racial slur connotation as well. It is far too common.

Urban Dictionary does have an alternate definition specific to use in South Florida to describe a person who is Lame. - entry date was 2017.

So was he was actually trying to say was, "we gotta
stop letting lame (people) in Miami" ?

Pretty sure I last heard it in the movie "Gran Torino"

No doubt that's where Carlton picked it up.

"Dirty" old white man best known for talking to an empty chair and his difficulty remembering how many shots he fired is continuing to corrupt the youths of America.

Term most likely dates back to the Philippine-American War (~1900) and has been used against a wide range of peoples, usually Asians but occasionally Europeans and even the English. Unknown origins, possibly "goo-goo," from the Tagalog language (a major language spoken in the Philippines). Although many have it originating in Korea either by referring Korea's original name, "Hanguk", or during the Korean War when Koreans would ask American GI's "Mi Guk?" ("American?" in Korean) which sounded like they were saying "Me asian." Was soon adopted for use in the Vietnam War. Technically this should only apply to Koreans, but the Vietnam War made it most popular when applied towards the Vietnamese.

I don't even know what race that's a slur against and i'm too afraid to have that search history on my laptop.
