Great coach and a better man.
Coached the greatest defense of the last 50 years in 1992.
Won national title in 1992.
Last of the old school coaches play defense and run the ball.
VS Auburn, LSU and Tennessee went 15-5-1.

7 starters from that defense were All-SEC; 3 were All-American that year and Langham was All-American the following year. 4 first round draft picks.
Made the guy who won all this into a punk:

Johnny Unitas Golden Arm Award (1992)

Consensus All-American (1992)

Your thread made me think something had happened to him for a split second.

Great man and coach... I hate to wordsmith nit-pick but.... why is he a "former Alabama great"...?
It might not be common knowledge, but when Coach Bryant retired, he recommended Alabama hire Coach Stallings in 1983 .. but the school went with Ray Perkins instead. It turned out Coach Perkins' ego was inflated considerably to put it mildly, and he was only mildly successful while antagonizing a lot of influential backers.
When Perkins left, Alabama was in the throes of a faculty power play with all kinds of stupid academic types sounding off about becoming a Harvard or something. That is why that Georgia Tech alumni Bill Curry was hired much to the dismay of the football program...a lot of people remembered Bobby Dodd, the Saturday Evening Post article, whiskey bottles thrown at Bryant in Atlanta, and the ill will generated when that arse hole school left the conference.
Curry made things worse because the first thing he did was give a speech declaring that academics for his players came first... And the University President said about the hire, "at least the faculty will be pleased." Good god what a couple of tool fools....

Curry was a 3 win coach except at Alabama.

Great defensive coach and good overall leader.
The one flaw is that he couldn't modernize his offense to keep up with what Florida and Tennessee were doing. Bama stuck with that "3 yards and a cloud of dust" philosophy all the way up to Saban for all practical purposes.

I did some promotions with Coach Stallings and he was truly a nice guy.

If you're old enough to remember that 1992 game
you are definitely old enough to remember Max Howell

My Freshman year 92. I would suggest everyone read the Story on John Mark his son. Gene is in his final act. Agree with the above post. He is a better Man that Coach.

You are right he was not going to change. He was hard nosed and tough.

by all accounts he is a very good man, but judging by the other 4 coaches that won national titles at Alabama, he is a good coach but not a very good coach.

Freaking this.. From now on any Coach Stallings threads should begin with a "he's ok disclaimer".. I bleed orange and blue, but I have mad respect for coach.

He's one of the finest people who has ever been associated with college football.

Coach Bryant and Tom Landry hired him.

That was one of the damnedest plays I've ever seen in a football game, much less a nat'l championship game!

I can see him now pacing the sideline in his suit and raising hell about something. Love that man.

Can’t remember if it was Bebes, or somebody else who said “Lamar Thomas was running for a touchdown, Teague was running for his life.”
