You can't ever really see your own team the way your opponent sees them, so I'm curious. What's the overall impression Dave Aranda's LSU defense left on your brain?

I honestly don’t think about LSU enough to remember Dave Aranda. All I remember about LSU is giving up the most passing yards in SEC history to State this season.

I always thought he was excellent at scheming against the thing you did well (at least against Alabama). LSU always seemed prepared to stop the thing we did best, especially in the first half. He was as good as anybody else at basically out-scheming your script - which is really hard.

I also thought there were times he out thought himself.

They were always good, from what I remember. Maybe not the best defense year in and year out, but really good most of the time.

I mean, it was an arse whipping that's in the record books. Didn't they pass for like 600 yards? So yeah, people tend to remember extremes, whether they're good or bad. I mean, everyone remembers that 3-2 Miss St/Auburn game. It would make sense they'd remember a third setting cornholing in Mike Leach's first SEC game.

They seemed solid, but not as good as some of the defenses under Les Miles.

The pinnacle of LSU defense was under Chief and some of the Saban teams. Those teams you went into the game knowing you weren't gonna get much. Aranda seemed to be really good at adjusting. JMO, though and I may be misremembering.

It is hard to say. I know we (Auburn) struggle with his defenses, but we also had a high school coach that was stuck in the NCAA rules and times of 2013 and never adapted. All in all, I think he was a good game day coach. Made adjustments. Had some good schemes.

They really figured out the mesh in coaching and personnel of being able to pound with big teams and run sideline to sideline with early spread teams better than anybody else in the SEC.

I think Aranda is excellent overall.

However, he does require smart players. A lot of elite athletes are not. I think he fit at Wisconsin better than LSU, as he can really out scheme you if he has sharp players.

I always thought Aranda's defense was pretty solid, but he had some stud athletes on those defenses. Always felt like he just let them play fast and kept it fairly simple. Seems like LBs thrived in his system.

Really hard to judge though as he came in during the offensive explosion so everything is relative.

Dave Aranda always had a good defense - great defensive mind. I think the loss of Aranda, and replacing him with Pelini hurt them way more than losing Brady. I was thrilled when Aranda left, because he was undervalued by the the fanbase

Overrated. It's good but not great and the numbers back that up.

A retard man like Gus Malzahn was able to easily score against Aranda. That's what I remember the most.

Man for all of Chief's flaws he really did have a knack for shutting down the spread.

3-2-6 Mustang package was deadly

As for Dave, I think the only knock you can have on him is his teams occasionally tended to play on their back heels because they were thinking too much.

Very cerebral oriented system and coach and it asked a lot of the players mentally.

This is because of the pleasure principle

Miss State has been and forever will be LSU's bitch. Have fun with last years anomaly. Even with your win from last year, the record over the last 35 years.

LSU 30
State 5

LSU's 2017 defense was awful in the front 4. They were 95th in the country in rush defense.

No amount of scheming can take a miserable run defense and make them good against a very good rush offense that uses a QB and a RB.
