It's Week Zero and I already remember how hard football play by play announcers suck these days and why I turn the volume way down or all the way off.

It's probably nostalgia or whatever, but I miss the play by play announcers like Ron Franklin and Pat Summerall and Dick Enberg who blended into the telecast instead of trying to dominate the telecast and being complete blow hards and loud asses.

I blame Joe Buck. Joe Buck started the trend of blow hard and loud arse play by play announcers, the ones who think that people tune in primarily to hear them talk instead of watching the football game, and now young play by play announcers come up thinking that they need to be like Joe Buck.

It's all Joe Buck's fault. F*** Joe Buck!

I heard the announcer of Nebraska and Northwestern talking about emojis earlier. Fricking emojis. It's just one example of the ridiculousness of modern day announcing.

They think it’s a podcast with football in the background.

Play by play? The analysts/color commentators are even worse.

That's pretty much perfectly summed up I think.

I don't claim to have all the answers or any of the answers, but there has to be a better way to telecast a football game. In theory it's not radio where you can't have dead air or more than 2 or 3 seconds of no talking in a row. It's literally been the same template for 50 years – play by play announcer and color commentator, with the play by play announcer filling up 90 percent of the air time and the color commentator awkwardly chiming in here or there. The problem is that the play by play announcers have gotten increasingly bloviated and cutesy and think that they're the star of the performance.

Yeah that's pretty frigging mortifying.

The other one is where the play by play announcer is convinced that he and the color commentator are some hilarious comedy team, and the play by play announcer will rib the color commentator about how much he ate at dinner last night or something random, and then they'll do an entire little cutesy back and forth during the middle of the game.

It's like it's become mandatory for every broadcast.
