I think that you are wrong.

This conference explodes over gymnastics and softball already.

We have the resources.

The Earth has 7.7 billion people currently.

Money is money.

So your plan is for athletic depts. to pump millions upon millions of dollars into men's collegiate soccer in hopes that it becomes popular in 10, 15, 20 years down the road?

Why not just let the pro soccer league become wildly popular so you can ensure that it will be a money making venture at the collegiate level and not just a niche sport?

You keep talking about planet earth. Most of planet earth doesn't give a damn about collegiate athletics. There are parts of our own country that don't give a damn about college sports for that matter. Cricket is wildly popular in parts of the world. Do you know a single rule involving cricket?

ETA China has over 1 billion people in it. Ask them what a bama is and they would look at you like you were crazy.

You have no concept of how popular pro soccer is in America right now.

I have read articles on the subject since this thread started.

quote:

With the season a third of the way through, the league has averaged a healthy 20,809 fans per game. Before getting into why teams are drawing well this season, it’s worth a look back at history.

That isn't bad at all.

This is the bad thing though......

quote:

There still is a disconnect, meanwhile, between the live game experience and fans watching on TV. While MLS attendance is on par with that of some of the best leagues in the world, national television ratings averaged under 300,000. That’s fewer than the average for a New York Yankees game on YES Network, the team’s regional sports network.

Do you have a Degree from an SEC School?

I paid $55,000 for a Bachelor's Degree at Auburn.

I think that Soccer would do very well in the SEC.

Go to Walmart and buy your T-Shirts for $1.99.

The numbers I linked say you are wrong. Opinions are like a-holes. Men's soccer doesn't do very well at any University........even the ones who have had it for decades.

Well yeah. Viewership is gonna be lower when league games aren’t consistently being shown on the biggest channels.

Except MLS is shown on ESPN2, FS1, and Fox.

Yes but it’s shown in garbage time and it’s never really promoted. Also MLS is only shown on ESPN or Fox when we are in the off-season for literally everything else. Most of the time it’s FS1.

Just trying to prove to you that soccer at the collegiate level is not at all popular. It might be different if we were in another country. Football is not popular worldwide, yet in this country it is king. From the numbers I linked, women's basketball is more popular than men's soccer.............even at schools where men's soccer is actually popular.

There is one other problem people are over looking. Youth soccer, which is what we would be getting, is not a popular draw anywhere in the world. FC Barcelona, a massively popular team that plays in huge stadiums (99K at home), has one of the most successful youth programs in the world.

They have a network of soccer academies all over the world and a huge pool of scouts scouring the globe for young talent and all of that gets funneled into their youth program at Barcelona. And it shows, they do, for the most part, very well.

They also play in a 1750 capacity stadium. That is it. That is about the capacity of West Memphis High School's football stadium.

Also, when do you play your soccer games? In the fall you are going head to head to with football unless you play games during the week... when folks really can't travel to games. In the winter you've got basketball being played throughout the week. In the spring baseball.

All three are incredibly popular sports in the SEC footprint. Which one do you throw men's soccer against? People can only afford to go to X amount of events a year. The best you can hope for is to establish soccer at the expense of gutting another sport.

The only way I see for men's soccer to become an extremely popular collegiate sport in the US is if American football vanishes off the face of the planet. It would take some time and I don't think it would match the popularity of football but they would draw decent crowds then.

Mind you, I love soccer. I think it would be great for it flourish in the US. I just do not see an opportunity for it to compete at a money making level in college.

At the bottom of the article you posted.

quote:

Just remember though, these same schools receiving tens of millions of dollars just can’t find a way to afford to pay their players. I don’t know of too many Division III programs that are raking in $50 million per year.

Soccer doesn’t have to be a sport that loses money though. There are enough fans that if it was embraced by the universities and the Athletic departments it could take off.

I think SEC Lacrosse would be huge. At least as popular as MBB after a decade or so.

What does that have to do with men's collegiate soccer?

There are actually Universities out there that would love to pay their players. SEC schools being some of them. The NCAA says that's illegal.

Hell, California has a bill going through their State that will allow athletes to make money from their likeness. The NCAA has insinuated that the Cali schools who do this will be kicked out of the NCAA.

ETA That's the thing. No matter what sport you add, you must also add another one.

Would rather increase baseball scholarships and take away from football.
