Have heard that a few SEC schools are talking about closing classes down. I wonder if it will effect Spring Practice at those schools.

If so, I wonder if the NCAA will give teams make up time, since practice time is so limited and important.

I bet the athletes are in such good shape, it would have minimal effect on them.

Texas A&M University Coronavirus Update :: Frequently Asked Questions

Message from the Provost:

WILL THE UNIVERSITY CANCEL CLASSES?

We understand the increased anxiety on our campuses and throughout the community. TAMU administration is actively monitoring and responding to the situation and will continue to follow the guidance of public health agencies. At this time, there have been no recommendations to suspend campus operations. With this in mind, TAMU campuses will remain open. In order to accommodate students who may be experiencing symptoms or who believe they should isolate themselves, we are working with instructors and managers to ensure maximum flexibility during this time of uncertainty.

My son attends AU and he has friends at UA and UGA. The rumor is they all are considering having the rest of the semester conducted thru the internet. If one does it, you know the rest will follow.

A number of universities already have.

Rice & U of Washington both have off the top of my head. Bunch of others following suit already.

Most big schools will likely cancel the week after spring break.

Statement from UA tonight: The University of Alabama has no plans of closing, canceling courses or moving to online-only courses after Spring break. Our campus has a number of comprehensive plans to address emergencies and a variety of contingencies.

Vandy and Stanford have as well. Alabama and Mississippi schools probably won’t because there isn’t an immediate threat. UGA very well may due to proximity of Atlanta where numerous cases have been confirmed and because of a decent contingent of out of state students. Every school is going to approach it differently based on its makeup of students and proximity out y to the outbreak

Spring break is the wild card. Students will travel and will bring back whatever sickness they picked up. The safe choice would have been to cancel Spring break and try to wrap up the semester asap.

Agreed but here we are. I think best thing is to go to online learning for any courses that lack labs or studios. At least reduce the number of individuals on campuses by a large portion

I've got 2 at UA, both flying out Saturday skiing in CO for spring break. Classes are scheduled to resume on campus 3/23. Things can change obviously, but I'd have to think this panic will be much worse after spring break and on into April/May as it spreads and more cases are found.

A&M is on Spring Break this week, so we really can’t wrap up the semester.

As a professor I can say there’s a heap of work that goes into preparing online courses—more so than face-to-face.
It’s not just a matter of swapping a F2F course to an online one.

This could end up being a logistical nightmare..

Ain’t no serious SEC school gonna cancel football practice.

So with that said, Missouri might cancel football practice.

Looks like UF just went to online only. The dominoes are starting to fall.

The smart thing for schools not already having incidents would be to cancel Spring Break, but dumbasses would have thrown a fit.

If your community doesn’t have incidents then the safest thing for the students would be to sit tight and continue going to classes as normal.

The second you let them travel you can no longer reconvene school if things go south.

This will be gone by mid summer hopefully, but the ramifications of the poor handling and misinformation campaign (the virus is very real, dumbasses) will be around much longer.

You can not block out visitors or prevent students from going home on weekends. sitting tight sounds good if you live on a island.

Small numbers of students traveling is not as much of an issue as long as they aren’t going to a high risk country in which case they would be quarantined anyways.

It’s all a numbers game. Large numbers of students traveling to many different places and back significantly increases risk of one of those students being exposed and bringing it back.

You can't do online only especially for majors with lab coursework.
