THE HISTORY

The land shark started in 2008, the creator was linebacker Tony Fein. Tony Fein was the leader on and off the field. Fein spent four years in the army and served in Iraq, he then went to Scottsdale Junior College in Arizona in 2005. During his time at Scottsdale Junior College he became an all american. He then signed with Ole Miss to fill the void that the infamous Patrick Willis left in the middle. Fein was able to fill the void with attitude and heart. His play was full of passion. It was his tackle on Florida Gator receiver Percy Harvin that made it 4th and 1. The rebel fans know the rest of that story. He was a wonderful man that made a major impact on the lives of numerous people. The Ole Miss family took a huge hit in 2009 when word was released that he had passed away. Time has helped heal the pain of this tragic loss, but his legacy will forever be remembered. Fein put his trademark on the Rebel Defense with his “Land shark” fin like motion with his hand after big plays. This sign tells the opposition that the sharks are feeding.

LAND SHARK NATION MISSION

The mission of the Land Shark Nation is easy. The Land Shark Nation is built on attitude. The Nation has the ability to change games on and off the field. The “LSN” will not let what Tony Fein started fade away over time. It must grow and unite the fan base together on defense. The Nation is a different type of Ole Miss Rebel fan. This is the type of fan that understands they can change games for opposing offenses. The Nation will grow more and more everyday. The Land Shark Nation will be on a mission to build the “perfect” fan or unite the ones we already have together. The “Land Shark” defenses of the past have set the foundation. However, it’s something that can grow and be a force around the nation. It gives the Ole Miss Rebel defense a calling. Perhaps the most important factor in this defense’s success though is the high level of confidence and teamwork with which they play. This defense does not look like a group of individuals but rather operates with incredible cohesion. Perhaps the strongest piece of evidence for this claim is the defense’s self-applied moniker of "Landsharks."



I’m certain you’ve seen this before. What you may not know are the origins of the hand signal and the unusual nature by which it was embraced by the defense.

While this is only a story based on second-hand information, both of my sources are pretty good in that they’re very much in touch with the goings on of the Rebel football program. Basically I wasn’t told this by any particular player(s) first-hand so take it for what it’s worth.

Apparently, Tony Fein started using the term "Landshark" in practice a few months ago. During one of his better days on the practice field, he told the defense that he was a playing like a "Landshark" and threw the hand-fin up on his helmet. At first, his fellow defenders thought this to be, well, ‘tarded. Tony, however, did not cease being a self-proclaimed. As practices wore on, Tony got better and better and with his growing confidence, kept flinging up his fin. Eventually, this grew on a few of his fellow defenders.

The first time that I can recall seeing it was during the Florida game. Powe rocked a shark’s fin during the victory celebration if my memory serves me well enough.

As the season progressed, and as the wins continued to pile up, the Landsharks moniker evolved from something Tony Fein did while being goofy (please don’t hurt me Tony, I’m only a bloggeur) to a symbol of pride and unity among our defenders.
