Finebaum: At this point, Tennessee fans have to be content if they win six or seven games

“Heupel is a good coach, but he is not going to inspire many people. I think what it shows more than anything else is Tennessee is not a very good job,” Finebaum said to SDS’s Connor O’Gara on the latest Saturday Down South Podcast. “You can’t go out and hire the best coaches at Tennessee because not only has the program been in a free fall, but it is facing punishing NCAA sanctions and I think for that reason, most people wanted to stay away.”

“I think Tennessee is heading toward a very bad and dark period, of which, it has to be content — even though it won’t be — to win 6 or 7 games,” Finebaum continued. “It’s not impossible to go from that level to great success, but I don’t see it in the near future.

“I’m usually not one to be overly pessimistic because I’ve seen a lot, as you have. I don’t have a good feeling about this program right now. I think Josh Heupel is indicative of that. If it wins 8 or 9 games in the next 2 or 3 years, that would be considered fantastic. But I think the program has to lower its sights.

“It’s no longer relevant. Tennessee is no longer an important program in the SEC. It has fallen that far behind, and I say that as a Tennessee graduate and as someone who remembers Tennessee being on a similar plateau as Alabama. It wasn’t that long ago, but it seems like forever.”

Here’s what I don’t get

Why does the fact that Tennessee was good in the past mean their fans should expect to be “good” now?

The game has changed. The SEC is so much more competitive.

Tennessee doesn’t recruit good enough to compete with the big boys.

The talent in the state has fallen

This is flat out wrong. The talent has improved significantly the last decade as Tennessee's population continues to climb. In particular in the Middle Tennessee and metro Nashville area. Obviously there will be ebs and flows with some years being better than others in terms of in state talent, but that's true for every state not named CA, FL, GA, TX

Tennessee has averaged around 12th nationally in recruiting in recent history. Their problem is and has been leadership and cheap, bottom of the barrel coaching hires one after the other.

I seem to remember a lot of talking heads parroting this same shite after we fired Shula. Alabama fans were told by sports journalists and rival fans that the game had changed and the SEC was too competitive for one team to dominate the way Alabama had done in the past.

All it takes is one hire to change the narrative.

Tennessee instate talent is better than it's ever been. Recruiting isn't the issue, or at least, it hasn't been the issue.

He's not wrong, everyone knows the new guy is just there to burn off the probation years. Once that's over Tennessee has a shot at making a serious hire.

How good is Heupel at recruiting top talents? He was bad at Missouri and same at UCF. Tennessee should get better talents than what Missouri and UCF got when he was OC at Missouri and HC at UCF. As a HC and his offense that is not that great that is going to be a problem. It should be similar to Leach.

Maybe! If Tennessee fans would stay out of the way of future to let the AD get the HC of his liking if that means if it comes down to be Greg Schiano again or anyone that Tennessee fans doesn't like, then it will be a nightmare for Tennessee.

UCF (like every other G5 school) is not going to get blue chip recruits no matter who the coach is

Yeah, if only they hired some weirdo who is obsessed with khaki pants, climbing trees, and having slumber parties with teenage boys.
