Let's delve into the details of Dan Mullen's tenure at MSU, specifically his record against SEC opponents:
SEC Record: 33-39 (45.8%)
SEC West Record: 18-33 (35.3%)
Of his 33 wins....
*Four were against teams that finished with 2 total wins:
2-10 Vanderbilt (2009)
2-10 Ole Miss (2011)
2-10 Kentucky (2012)
2-10 Kentucky (2013)
*Three were against teams that finished with 3 total wins:
3-9 Auburn (2012)
3-9 Arkansas (2013)
3-9 Vanderbilt (2014)
*Three were against teams that finished with 4 total wins:
4-8 Ole Miss (2010)
4-8 Arkansas (2012)
4-8 Arkansas (2017)
*Six were against teams that finished with 5 total wins:
5-7 Kentucky (2011)
5-7 Tennessee (2012)
5-7 Kentucky (2014)
5-7 Kentucky (2015)
5-7 Missouri (2015)
5-7 Ole Miss (2016)
*Three were against teams that finished with 6 total wins:
6-7 Kentucky (2010)
6-7 Georgia (2010)
6-7 S. Carolina (2016)
***So 19 of Mullen's 33 SEC wins (58%) were against SEC opponents with losing records.
*Five were against teams that finished with 7 total wins:
7-6 Kentucky (2009)
7-6 Arkansas (2014)
7-6 Auburn (2015)
7-6 Texas A&M (2017)
7-6 Kentucky (2017)
*** this means 24 of Mullen's 33 SEC wins (73%) were against teams that finished 7-6 or worse
*Seven were against teams that finished with 8 total wins:
8-5 Florida (2010)
8-5 Ole Miss (2013)
8-5 Auburn (2014)
8-5 LSU (2014)
8-5 Texas A&M (2014)
8-5 Arkansas (2015)
8-5 Texas A&M (2016)
*Two were against teams that finished with 9 total wins:
9-4 Ole Miss (2009)
9-4 LSU (2017)
***Zero were against teams with 10 wins or more on the year.
So in all, Mullen's 33 SEC wins came against opponent that were a combined 186-227 (45.0%). Only TWO of his 33 SEC wins (6%) came against opponents that finished better than 8-5.
All of this talk of, "Well very few coaches could do what he did at Mississippi State" is not based on reason or facts. What DID he do at Mississippi State that is at all impressive? Which single win was worthy of such praise? Sure, you can claim without argument that he was a master at beating crappy opponents. Good thing for him he got to face Kentucky every year from the East instead of Georgia or Florida.

the rant is Dan Mullen obsessed as of late

0-12 coming, Mullen sucks, tell me something we haven’t heard for the last 3 months. Thanks for the info.

I've never bought into the mullen fool's gold for the exact reasons you mentioned. Yes, he did extremely well "at mississippi state" and did better than pretty much anyoen else has there. Give him credit for that. But he just doesn't have any signature, top notch wins. His wins against big teams like UGA/UF/AU were in years those teams were barely better than average, or worse than average.
Certainly he will have a ton more talent at UF (eventually) than he's ever had at MSU but there's really nothing to prove that he'll be able to out-coach the other big teams he's competing against.

Of all things, if I'm a UF fan the one thing I'm not particularly concerned with is Mullen getting truly out coached by other Big 6 coaches.
Talent deficiency, system or program culture is far more likely to be why he can't match up with other big programs IMO.

The Gators have been pretty bad for awhile now. I’m not sure why Georgia and State fans spend so much time thinking about them and Dan Mullen.

UGA is your biggest conference rival and MSU is where mullen just came from.
Can you really not connect those dots?

Its amazing that all of a sudden Mullen is the star of the summer box hit that has filled movie theatres throughout the South.

Sorry, I should have said “I’m not sure why some Georgia and State posters keep rehashing the same threads about Florida and Mullen over and over again.”

Yeah, I wouldn’t be too concerned with all of those QB dives up the middle against UGA or Auburn if I’m a Gator fan either. Or late game management against Bama.

Now let's look at his recruiting prowess:

When you have the windfall of cash that comes from being in the SEC... how can you NOT land a Top 25 class? I get maybe Vanderbilt, Kentucky, and Missouri not doing it, but everyone else ought to be landing Top 25 classes every season.

I think the point he is making is, there were no threads started by Georgia fans telling everyone how overrated Mac was. Some folks would see that as a sign of fear or worry. Not me but some people. I have no idea what Mullen is and enjoy the banter.

I honestly think the reason he did better than anyone else was because he was the first head football coach hired by Greg Byrne. We had a bad track record of bad ADs and just a bad athletic department in general will little to no money. Relatively speaking we're still at the bottom of the SEC but we're more of a top 30 nationally rather than top 100 like we were pre Byrne. We've had a great track record of ADs in recent years with Byrne, Stricklin, and Cohen. State does have the resources rn to maintain this position and with schools like LSU, Ole Miss, and Arkansas with some serious question marks going into the future, State is actually one of the more stable programs in the SEC West rn.
I think within the next 30 years he won't even be in the discussion for one of the best coaches at State simply because State will have a HC who won't go 0-9 vs Alabama.

Touché. I’m just saying to expect the play calling, especially late in important games, to be questionable decisions quite a bit.

Imagine being a Mississippi State fan bitter about a coach who had you universally #1 in the country for a month at one point.
For emphasis, we're talking about Mississippi State.
