Expanded CFP Looking Back - 2015
Just doing this for shits and giggles. Don't @ me.

I've included the team's final college football playoff ranking in parenthesis if it differed from the seeding shown here.

* denotes team is an automatic conference champion qualifier.

Of note: No. 12 Ole Miss is knocked out by 18th ranked conference champion, Houston.

Round 1
FSU vs ND
Solid Season for FSU after having to replace Heisman Trophy winning QB, Jameis Winston (Who Dat!?) The resumes here are pretty even. FSU lost their bowl to Houston 38-24. ND lost theirs to Ohio State 44-28. One of FSU’s two regular season losses was to 3-9 GT. ND’s regular season loses were to Clemson and 13th ranked Stanford. They had like 4 common opponents and ND did better in ¾ of those. As much as I was raised to hate ND, I think they have a better shot at Clemson in the rematch than FSU would in their rematch. ND.

Iowa vs Houston
Iowa’s first loss of the year came at the hands of Michigan State in the Big 10 championship game on MSU TD with 30 seconds left. They went on to lose their bowl game to Standford 45-16. Houston’s lone loss of the year was in the regular season to 6-7 UCONN. They won their bowl game 38-24 over FSU. I flipped a coin… Give me Iowa.

TCU vs. Stanford
TCU’s two losses came in the regular season to No. 12 OK State and No. 7 Oklahoma. They beat No. 7 Baylor in the season finale and No. 15 Oregon in the Alamo Bowl. Both in multiple overtimes. Standford’s resume seems superior. Their two regular season losses were to a 10-3 Northwestern team and Oregon who finished the season at 15 in the CFP rankings. They had wins over No. 4 ND and No. 5 Iowa in the Rose Bowl. I think Stanford wins this one.

Ohio State vs. North Carolina
Ohio State’s only loss on the year was to No. 9 Michigan State 17-14. They had big wins over No. 10 Michigan and No.8 ND. The rest of their schedule sucked. But more of NC’s schedule sucked. They lost their home opener to South Carolina team that finished 3-9. And then won the rest of their regular season games until they finally hit some form of competition in Clemson in the ACC championship game and Baylor in the Citrus Bowl. They lost those 45-37 and 49-38 respectively. Give me Ohio State here.

Quarterfinals
Clemson vs. ND
ND has been discussed. Clemson (flash in the pan) had 3 top 10 wins until running into Alabama in the National Championship losing 45-40. I do think they were the second best team in the country this year. Clemson.

Iowa vs. Oklahoma
This was the debate in 2015 with Iowa losing the Big 10 Championship game, Oklahoma crushing Ok State 58-23 in their non-conference-championship-game-during-championship-game-weekend season finale, and opening the door for Oklahoma to jump ahead of them to grab the fourth spot in the CFP. Idk Big game Bob Stoops? The Big 10 was stronger this year. Give me Iowa.

Michigan State vs. Stanford
Mich State had one bad loss to a 6-7 Nebraska team. They got bumped out of the playoffs by the eventual national champion, Alabama 39-0. I think Stanford would’ve matched up against Bama a little better. I think Stanford was underrated this year. And I like Tiger Woods. So give me the Cardinal in this one.

Ohio State vs. Alabama
I think Ohio State probably gives us a good team. The resumes are very similar. As mentioned Ohio State’s only loss on the year was to No. 9 Michigan State 17-14, and Alabama lost to a 10-3 Ole Miss team that finished second in the SEC West. Ohio State had a very weak schedule and lost to the first ranked team they faced. Give me the Crimson Tide.

Semi-Finals
Clemson vs. Iowa
I’ll take Dabo. He’s hitting his stride.

Alabama vs. Stanford
An interesting matchup that we don’t get to see very often. Give me the Tide.

Championship Game
Alabama vs. Clemson
We know how this one ends.

Same champion, but Iowa and Stanford replace Oklahoma and Michigan State respectively in the final four. We also get to actually see Iowa and Oklahoma play instead of sitting around watching a bunch of talking heads try and figure out who's better.

Or, we get exactly the same 4, with exactly the same blowouts in the semifinals. That's actually a far more likely result. Except the blowouts are worse, because Alabama and Clemson are rested, where Michigan State and Oklahoma are coming off tough games where they get beaten up and maybe even lose key players to injuries.

That was a great Stanford team loaded with NFL players. They probably wouldn't have beaten Alabama, but they would have given them a game, IMO.

Michigan State needed a last minute TD drive to beat Iowa in the Big 10 title game. Stanford beat Iowa 45-14 in the Rose Bowl. McCaffrey would have been a difficult matchup.

I'm doing all of the CFP years starting with 2014. It just takes a while.
