"Everyman" Gus Malzahn laments Waffle House, wife making him fix his own sandwiches

The back booth of the Waffle House on Glenn Avenue hasn’t seen its usual Saturday night occupants this fall.
The only sign of its typical patrons is tucked around the corner of the back wall that’s adorned with a framed photo of “Bo Over the Top” from the 1982 Iron Bowl. There sits an orange-and-blue Waffle House hat signed by the restaurant’s entire staff and featuring the score of Auburn’s season-opener against Kentucky on Sept. 26.
The hat was intended as a gift to Gus Malzahn and his wife Kristi to commemorate the 29-13 win against the Wildcats, which kicked off their eighth season at Auburn. Deb McGrew, a server at the Waffle House on Glenn, was going to present it to the Malzahns when they came in for their customary post-win meal that night, but she never got the opportunity.
“I’ll tell you what, I’m real disappointed I can’t go to my Waffle House after the game,” Malzahn said. “So, it’s a weird year, like we’ve talked about, in a lot of different ways.”
Everyone has had to buy in and make various sacrifices this season. For the Malzahns, their Saturday night visits to Waffle House store No. 1882 have been among them.
“It’s kind of an everyman’s place,” Kristi said. “You know, everybody’s always welcome at Waffle House. You can walk in in your dressiest of dresses that you’d see during prom season and formal season; you see people in there in their prom and formal looks, but you also see those that are down on their luck and those that have had a little too much fun and those that have been trying to drown some sorrows maybe."
They tried curbside to-go from Waffle House a couple times this summer, but it just wasn’t the same as the in-booth experience.
“He’s truly — he’s hitting reality that he’s having to have the basic, normal life,” Kristi said. “He’s eating leftovers because that’s what’s in the fridge and it’s late, so fix yourself a sandwich.”
Stay-at-Home Orders: Gus Malzahn’s Waffle House tradition on hold

Do people go to Waffle House sober?

Is Waffle House in Auburn not open?

I have gone sober exactly one time. Also only time I went during daylight. I told my waitress this and she informed me at night she often encounters many drunk patrons who offer to be Bill to her Monica. I neglected to follow up by pulling a cigar out of my pocket. Missed opportunity I can never relive.

I think it's open, because it says they tried curbside to-go.
I gathered that they just decided not go in this year for "safety and accountability" reasons.

The Malzahns' cherished gameday tradition of celebrating wins with a postgame, late-night meal at Waffle House has been put on ice this season due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The decision by the Malzahns to forgo their celebratory tradition was about safety and accountability amid a public health crisis.

Probably for the best.
In hindsight, it might not be a great idea to have yo' dick smothered, covered, and chunked by a chick in the back room of a Waffle House.

Once you're over the age of 30, you should be. Waffle House is good food. You shouldn't eat it every day though. Still, I don't get why people disparage it.

Well, when you put it that way...
Would make for one hell of a Waffle House song for the jukebox though.
Sounds like a David Allan Coe tune to me...

Hell yeah. The hash browns are fricking awesome. Get a patty melt to go with them. Delicious.
I haven't been since Jan of this year and it really sucks.

A crowded Waffle House is the best “Dinner and a Show” theater in town.

Let me clear, I think it is good but if I'm in the mood for that type of food normally there is a better option during the day.

I don't think I've ever eaten there at lunch or dinner really. It's more about breakfast and late night.

Loved that place. Surprised it closed when it did since it always seemed popular.

I think I was there that night, the crash then plates rolling and the look of defeat on his sryup and hashbrown covered face is a scene I will never forgot
