He begged for jobs for years.. even Kansas, and he never got even a sniff. That tells you what the coaching world really thought of him. Just look at all the retreads that get hired, but nobody would return his calls. Case closed.

Saban recommended him for the lsu job when he left, but no one respected him.

It hurt Nutt’s approval rating because our so called fans thought he was looking for another job.

He should have gone to Nebraska when they came to get him and avoided all the petty bs thrown at him here.

They are much worse at Nebraska and wouldn't survive the high expectations in Lincoln.

Saban recommended him because he'd never have to worry about him.

Also, if you don't remember, the Nebraska fans were in an uproar at the thought of hiring him, which was part of why he backed out. Arkansas fans I knew at the time were hoping he'd leave. I was at a bar where everyone cheered when they were acting like it was a done deal. Nebraska would have eaten him alive, even worse than Ole Miss did.

And, once again, despite begging for jobs after Ole Miss, NOONE would hire him, or even give him an interview Most coaches and admins considered him a joke.

He really wasn't that great of a coach, but Butts is one of the most underrated contributors to US law of all time. Almost all of US libel law is based on his lawsuit and the subsequent NY Times v Sullivan case.

Alabama: Gene Stallings or Frank Thomas

Stallings is overrated by a lot of Bama fans. I think Frank Thomas is generally understood to be the third best coach in Bama history, no mean feat.

Make that 4th best. Surely you don’t rate him ahead of Wade.

Saban 6 NCs in 17, 9 SEC titles
Bryant 6 NCs in 25, 13 SEC
Wade 3 NCs in 8, 4 Southern titles. Put Southern football on the map. 2-0-1 in Rose Bowl, only bowl game in the country.
Thomas 1 NC (1941 is bogus), 4 SEC. 2-1 in Rose Bowl.

For Mizzou Don Faurot’s offensive innovation changed football and he even helped Arky as Frank Brooke’s came out of his program. In a more modern sense I would add Larry Smith. He revitalized a dead program and brought fans back after 2 decades of absolute dog shite. Hell the Flea Kicker game alone, with tears in his eyes as his team fought #1 and eventual national champion Nebraska into overtime brought many including me back into caring. I was a fan, grew up in the during the Warren Powers era. Though still a fan I like many had given up hope Mizzou would ever recover. frick I remember I was washing my truck at home listening, even though it was on tv. I came in at half and my fire was rekindled.
