ESPN is Destroying the Post-Season

I have a few things I'd like to rant about...
1. THEY ALMOST GAVE US UTAH IN THE PLAYOFF
All season long, the talking heads told us that Utah was some great team and that we peasants in the SEC who don't stay up late enough to watch Utah were uninformed about how great Utah is. Kirk Herbstreit and his ilk constantly say with such authority that they truly know how good all these teams are and we shouldn't disrespect them just because they've not beaten anyone and they have a loss to USC.
Bowl season exposed Utah as a complete fraud.... they probably aren't even one of the Top 20 best teams in the country, yet they were in line to make the playoff in December.
The Utes will have played only one ranked team when the Final AP Poll comes out... Oregon... and they lost by 22 points. They will have a loss to unranked USC by a Touchdown and a loss to unranked Texas by 28 points.
How in the heck do we have a system that almost rewards such a team with a spot in a 4-team playoff when they are seriously this bad? At some point its the media's responsibility to look at their resume and admit they've played NO ONE and lost to a subpar team. Zero wins over ranked opponents plus a loss to an unranked opponent ought to be a 100% disqualifier for the playoff.
I feel like ESPN either mislead the public out of their desire to try to show the PAC 12 respect or either they grossly overhyped a mediocre team, and it would be nice for them to come out and say, "We were wrong, they actually do suck" instead of moving on as if it never happened.
2. THE ROSE BOWL IS SO OVERHYPED ITS NEARLY UNWATCHABLE
I get it. It's a beautiful setting. But blue sky and mountain views does not mean that all of America gives a crap about that game anymore than we do about any other bowl game. The hype is so overdone it makes me want to turn off the TV. The thing is, it was actually a good game, but the way they go live from Pasadena for 3 days and spend 45 minutes post-game on the field, they treat it like its on a higher level than the National Title Game. Good grief.
3. THE GAME TIMES ARE ATROCIOUS
We used to get football on New Years Day at 10:00 AM CT. Why do they wait around until noon to kick the first game? Then on top of all that, they put two of the best games of the day on at the exact same time. At least stagger them a bit so you can watch the other game during halftime. The Outback Bowl should have kicked at 10:00 AM CT... like it used to... and the Citrus should have kicked at 11:00 AM CT.
The Rose Bowl needs to be moved up so that it doesn't cause the Sugar to kick so late that most of America (who is warn out from NYE the night before) is asleep by the time it starts.
The SEC ought to be irate at ESPN for kicking the Rose Bowl off so late in the afternoon, and then staying in Pasadena after the game to watch a pointless trophy presentation for so long that by the time the SEC's premiere contract bowl kicks off, everyone is asleep.
I can't imagine many people watched the Sugar Bowl when it kicks at 9:00 PM ET. ESPN treats it like its a complete afterthought and the SEC Office should not put up with that.
4. THE NATIONAL CHAMPIONSHIP SHOULD BE ON A SATURDAY
I hate the Monday night kick. It's a work night for adults and a school night for kids. I know there are NFL playoffs in January, but CFB stays away from Sundays to cater to the NFL, so they ought to stagger their playoff games as not to interfere with the CFB National Title Game. If the game were at 7:00 PM CT on a Saturday, everyone would be watching. There would be watch parties and all day hype. But because its on a Monday, people are still getting home from work when it kicks, and some are going to bed by halftime.

this is all correct... but look at the parent company....
Disney bought up marvel and star wars and is actively looking at ways to run them both into the ground.

1. On Utah there was no good choice for that 4th spot. Maybe Oregon had they not chocked vs ASU.
2. Disagree completely and I’m an SEC guy. See the stands and passion vs the Sugar Bowl. The sugar is totally washed away at this point.....
3 i agree here
4 also agree completely. Monday night sucks balls

This is exactly why I’m worried about them buying the SEC. They just won’t treat it the same as CBS. Sure, Gary sucks, but it’s not worth losing great production with CBS, for average production by ESPN. They just don’t care enough as SEC fans do

The Rose Bowl hype is really, really dumb. So is the Orange Bowl being played on the 29th of December and the playoffs on the 28th with a 13 day gap before the title game.
Bowl tie ins are a fricking joke in this day and age and need to be done away with. I guarantee UGA fans would have flooded Miami for the Orange if not for Virginia being obligated to play in it and our wanting to avoid back to back games with them.
Pretty simply, the top 4 should go to the two CFP sites, teams 5-12 should review bids to go to any of the 4 remaining NY6 sites and then teams 13-whatever get to review bids for the remaining bowls.
Dec 20-31 should be all non NY6 and Playoff games, Jan 1 should be NY6, and the CFP should take place the following day or weekend

Be proactive and tell your school's administration and conference leadership to not prostitute tradition for the sake of money.
You can do it.

A piece of me will die when I no longer hear that CBS football intro on a cool fall day.

You mean spending New Years morning and afternoon outside in Southern California for midwesterners is more appealing than a third trip for Georgia fans to New Orleans in 18 months to watch a game at 7:45 pm on a Wednesday night?
The Sugar did just fine last year with Georgia and Texas fans. Attendance sucked this year because the bowl tie ins killed the novelty

My biggest gripe right now is why the extra week before the NCG ??
We need to be playing this thing on Monday the 6th, not next Monday the 13th.
It's almost going to be an afterthought to most of the nation

dang it for making me agree with an UGA poster/fan. you are spot on, though.

Well, if there's any school known to show leg for a paycheck, it's aggy.

Part of this is the SEC's fault for insisting on having the Sugar Bowl on New Year's Day, but I otherwise agree with your point. The entire bowl system is set up to work around the Rose Bowl, which is ridiculous.
I also agree the start times for the Citrus and Outback Bowls should be staggered. So stupid they both kickoff at the same time.

While I agree, you pointed out the reason it is not - NFL playoffs. No network wants to go up against NFL playoffs, so Monday it is.

Anyone else notice that this has been the only game where the network showed a substantial part of the halftime show just to try and add more credence to the Rose Bowl?

It is true that we had a season in which 3 teams were head-and-shoulder above the rest. But if the goal is to get the 4th best team, then they should get the 4th best team.
There are about 20 teams better than Utah. With zero wins over ranked opponents plus a loss to an outranked opponent, Utah should have been treated just like Memphis, Cincinnati, App State, etc. Instead, ESPN and the CFB Committee ignored reality and gave the PAC 12 respect that frankly was undeserved.
And that goes for the BIG 12 too. The Big 12 was horrific in bowl season.
The truth is, there isn't a single team in the BIG 12 that was a Top 10 team. Oklahoma would have been the 6th best team in the SEC. They too should have never made the playoff.
If the BIG 12 wants to be treated like the SEC and BIG 10, then it needs to beef up their schedules.
Oklahoma played Houston, South Dakota State, and UCLA OOC
Baylor played Stephen F Austin, UTSA, and Rice OOC
The two best teams in the BIG 12 played horrifically weak out-of-conference schedules, and they should have been penalized for it. If your conference can only produce two Top 25 teams, then those teams better at least test themselves out of conference or else they should be disqualified from the Playoff.
And don't give me that no one knows how their opponents will turn out and the schedules are made out too far ahead of time. BS. UCLA has one Top 15 finish in the last 21 seasons... I think its safe to assume when you book that series that UCLA might not pan out. And Baylor didn't even make an attempt to play anyone decent OOC.
Georgia, Florida, Alabama, Auburn, Oregon, Penn State, Minnesota, Wisconsin, etc. would have all been better choices than Oklahoma.
