Overall Rankings are theoretically "who is the best team" (though I don't think ESPN FPI is particularly good)
Strength of Record rankings are "who has the best resume" (I think this is pretty good)
OVERAL TEAM RANKINGS
1. Alabama
5. Auburn
7. Georgia
16. Mississippi State
19. LSU
32. South Carolina
37. Texas A&M
42. Missouri
47. Florida
53. Kentucky
57. Ole Miss
66. Tennessee
72. Arkansas
78. Vanderbilt
STRENGTH OF RECORD
2. Alabama
5. Georgia
7. Auburn
17. Mississippi State
22. LSU
27. South Carolina
35. Texas A&M
38. Kentucky
62. Ole Miss
64. Arkansas
67. Missouri
69. Tennessee
70. Florida
78. Vanderbilt

It's that time of year where the computer rankings start to get pretty damn accurate.

What I was thinking. Arky and Vandy can't be that bad, right?

How is Alabama's schedule better than Auburn's? We've played Clemson and Georgia.

You don't get a trophy for losing. "Strength of Record".

It isn't ranking schedules. It's ranking resumes.
Alabama is 10-0 against their schedule
Auburn is 8-2 against their schedule
Auburn is the highest ranked 2 loss team in strength of record, but they've lost 2 games (1 of which was to LSU). That is also part of your resume.

Because they are 10-0. This isn't strength of schedule, it's resume. Alabama has 2 Top 20 wins (7-3 LSU, 7-3 Mississippi State), a win over a 6-4 Texas A&M (sounds funny but look below at what counts for a "good win" for other teams) and 0 losses.
Who has a better overall resume than Alabama right now? The metrics say Miami, and I'd agree. Do any of the 1-loss teams?
Oklahoma is #3 in SOR. They lost to a 6-4 Iowa State team at home. They might have the best collection of wins, but they still have a loss to a 8-4/7-5 team.
Clemson is #4 in SOR. Their loss is to a Syracuse team that probably won't go to a bowl. They have a win over #5 Auburn but their other wins have faded (Virginia Tech 7-3, NC State 7-3, Louisville 6-4). If they were undefeated they'd be ahead of Alabama, but losing to a shitty team does and should tank you.
Georgia is #5 in SOR. They lost by 30 to Auburn and their best win is now borderline Top 10. They had a glut of 3 loss wins too (State, USC).
Wisconsin is #6. Their 2 best wins are 6-4 Iowa and 7-3 Northwestern. Their 3rd best win is probably Florida Atlantic.
So, that's how.

Yep. Strength of Schedule at this point Alabama is only ahead of Wisconsin out of the Top 10 per Sagarin. Which is probably about right.
1. Clemson (5)
2. Notre Dame (6)
3. Oklahoma (16)
4. Auburn (19)
5. Ohio State (26)
6. Penn State (27)
7. Miami (32)
8. Georgia (39)
9. Alabama (49)
10. Wisconsin (63)

I could name some one loss teams that I think have a better strength of record than bama. bama has beaten absolutely nobody.

Maybe, but those teams also lost games that Alabama has not lost, to teams that are equivalent to teams Alabama has played and beaten. And there are only 3 of them (Oklahoma, Clemson, Georgia). Everyone else has TWO losses.
Iowa State is 6-4. Syracuse is 4-6. Auburn is good but beat Georgia by 30.
Those are all the 1-loss teams. So, I think it makes pretty good sense.

I really don't think Auburn has beaten a really strong team yet........no disrespect to UGA. The SEC just isn't good this year, IMO. We won't know until Bowl season.

I mean, if Georgia isn't a really strong team I don't know who is. Certainly beating them by 30 is strong as shite.
I've watched enough of everybody else to see that there are about 7-8 teams that I think would be coin flips on any given Saturday with each other.
