Agreed. I don't think he really wants to get into a "character" war with either of them....

Eric Ramsey and 60 Minutes disagree.

I listend to Finebaum yesterday and thought that he rebounded pretty well. If anything Stallings gave this thing legs by giving Leech's opinion to much credit. Stallings was old school. I am a Stallings fan but the time were changing on him and he was not comfortable with it so he decided it was a good time to bow out. He was not perfect as many kool-aid drinkers want to believe.

I wouldn't go there. Gene Jelks was paid more than Ramsey. A lot more. And bama got probation for it along with lots of other things during Stallings time.

Stallings and Hootie Ingram contacted the NFL Players Association to see if the guy Langham named was an actual, registered, agent. When they answered that he was not, they blew it off...

When you accept money for being a football player at a university it doesnt matter if the person giving it out is an agent, booster, alumni or stranger off of the street, its a violation and affects eligibility. This is the part Stallings knew and disregarded as no big deal.

False. Not a single allegation Jelks made was proven, and no probation came from any of it.

Jelks later said he was paid by an Auburn booster to make allegations against Bama...but he is still persona non grata in Ttown.

Gene Jelks admitted that "others" had paid him to lie and that he basically wanted more for his efforts at BAMA. BAMA got in trouble for Langham and later A. Means.

November 1992 — Gene Jelks tells a newspaper he got a $2,100 "signing bonus" when he committed to Alabama in 1985 and received money from coaches and boosters during his playing career, which ended with the 1989 season.

Jan. 1, 1993 — Alabama beats Miami (Fla.) 34-13 in the Sugar Bowl for the national championship, the school's 12th and most recent.

January 1993 — The morning after the Sugar Bowl, All-America defensive back Antonio Langham signs a napkin at a party that sports agent Darryl Dennis later says is a representation contract. Langham plays in all of the regular-season games in 1993 before being declared ineligible. The NCAA denies an appeal.

Aug. 2, 1995 — For violations tied to Jelks and Langham, the NCAA puts the program on three years' probation, bans it from a bowl for a year, cuts nearly half its scholarships over two years and says it must forfeit eight wins and a tie in which Langham played in 1993.

1. Bama boosters and attorneys help Ramsey to bring down AU and get AU on probation because bama is tired of getting its arse kicked.

2. AU boosters return the favor by paying Jelks to come forward with what he was paid at Bama.

The NCAA seized upon the University of Alabama last week to explain anew a simple concept to its members: If you don't police yourself, the system will never work.

The Crimson Tide has won six Associated Press national championships and an NCAA-record 27 bowls. The university took as much pride in never having been on NCAA probation. That clean record dissolved in startling fashion last week when the Committee on Infractions gave Alabama penalties that stretched from the past through the present and into the future.

The Tide will be on probation for three years. There will be no bowl this year and no share of the Southeastern Conference post-season pool, which could cost the program as much as $1.1 million. The committee stripped 22 scholarships (13 in 1996-97 and nine in 1997-98) for freshmen and transfers and forced Alabama to forfeit eight regular-season victories and a tie in 1993. In that season, former All-America cornerback Antonio Langham played despite having signed with an agent.

That fact is not disputed by the university. Nor is the fact that former Alabama star Gene Jelks received improper loans from two boosters. Those two violations, relatively speaking, are pebbles on the NCAA scale of justice. Had Alabama been vigorous in unearthing what actually took place, the committee probably would have accepted the school's self-imposed scholarship reductions.

But the committee and university differed greatly on the interpretation of how the university handled its investigation of Langham. Where university officials pleaded stupidity, the committee saw coverup.

"This case demonstrates the consequences of a distressing failure of institutional control," says committee Chair David Swank, a University of Oklahoma law, professor.

Gene Jelks didn't play for Stallings. Jelks admitted afterwards that he lied. Stallings only crime was believing his player over a sleazy agent.

Actully Auburn's coaches on Eric Ramsey tapes did more to bring them down than any BAMA attorneys, and if Jelks recived $2100 then that would be alot LESS than Ramsey got.

Fact: Jelks got more money...but it was from Auburn booster Corky Frost. Trying to redeem himself for getting Auburn in trouble with Eric Ramsey.

That was his signing bonus. He got a lot more than that. His upfront cash was more and his two loans were more. There is really no need to go down this road unless you really want to.

After you "warned us?" Oh no! The Aubue warned us! Ramsey was on tape. Jelks admitted he lied. Both facts.

Jelks got more money from Bama than Ramsey from AU. Then Jelks also got more money from Frost than anything. He got a hell of a lot there because AU was pissed at Bama for getting them on probation, so returned the favor in SPADES.
