Downfall of Bama BB was firing Wimp. He was the best evaluator in USA. Rick

Barnes is a knock off of Wimp. His secret is evaluation as well. Alabama is very much like UT in hoops. They can't run with the big boys recruiting so they have to have a guy who can evaluate. I actually lost interest when the school fired Wimp so I was likely more of a Wimp fan that a real BB fan.

Wow stupidity reigns on this board.

I will agree with you there. I also think they ran him off because some thought his Offensive style was boring. Another case of watch what you ask for. Auburn did the same with Cliff Ellis.

Yea well he probably shouldn't have punched his secretary in the face Jim.

Old enough to know he relied on his half court offense and playing defense. He had some very good talent, but some thought he wasn't utilizing their skills eough. How old are you ?

And perhaps she shouldn't have been having an affair with a married man since she had a husband and children at home. Wimp was wrong as well but was in the process of calling it off with her and didn't invite her to go on a road trip. So she actually assaulted him to embarrass him on national TV. She scratched the holy hell out of his face and he looked like a mummy that night. And when she did he slapped hell out of her.

Do you really think that is why they fired him ? How many month after it happened did they finally pull the trigger ? Finebaum was hinting about it for weeks.

No Iron I'm sure your contrarian reason is the reason as always.
He resigned 2 days before her lawsuit hit. We were coming off 4 straight NCAAT and a 26 win season. Yeah I think it had quite a bit to do with it, especially considering we hired his right hand man in David Hobbs to take over for him. Not exactly the route you take when you want to go to a new style of play.

I went with Rick on a recruiting trip to a high school when he was recruiting one of my employee's son. And I can tell you three things about him when he was a young assistant under Wimp. He was a recruiting fool..He had supreme self confidence..And he had ultimate respect for Wimp Sanderson as an evaluator. "Uncanny" was the word he used.

Sorry Jim, there is never license to hit your wife in the face. Ever. Wimp paid the consequence for that mistake.
And Wimp was admittedly running around on her for over a decade at that point, too. It is what it is. He was the best coach we've had in the expanded tournament era, but he made a mistake and he paid for it.
I guarantee Hootie Ingram would have rather had Wimp for the next 5 years than David Hobbs, even with Hobbs good reputation as an assistant.

You are failing to mention that the University knew about the situation and even reassigned her to another University Department.Hootie didn't want to fire him, but someone took advantage of the situation. Wimp was the Mark Richt of SEC BB.

Wasn't his wife. The lady he slapped was his secretary and soon to be ex-GF since he was in the process of calling off the affair. Listen I'm not making excuses for anyone her but the soon to be ex, who was running around on her husband, intentionally marked him up for the game that night to embarrass him. And he responded by slapping her. Perhaps he deserved to be embarrassed but the university didn't. And perhaps she deserved to have the heck slapped out of her. There were no hero's here and both parties put themselves in a bad spot.

I’m still pissed at his secretary.

100% agree Jim - one of many embarrassing situations for the University during that 10-15 year period.
And it sucks, because Wimp had some great kids in the pipeline that he had to hand over to Hobbs. He still had 4-5 good years left to get hot in the tournament and finally make the run he deserved.

Love Wimp. Went to a couple of his camps back in the 80’s. Just a great guy and brilliant basketball mind.

Wimp and Sonny were great for basketball in Alabama.
And hilarious.
