Source: Alabama is hiring Doug Marrone as offensive line coach.

Is already now in town in Tuscaloosa.

Comes to Alabama after four seasons as the head coach of the Jacksonville Jaguars.

Marrone and Bill O'Brien are close friends dating back to working at Georgia Tech together. Both were NFL head coaches last season.

quote:

The two coaching colleagues stayed in frequent contact using one another as sounding boards through each step of their coaching careers. The experience Marrone gained in taking on a struggling program at Syracuse undoubtedly had an impact on O'Brien when he decided to take on the challenge of being the next head coach at Penn State in the wake of the Jerry Sandusky scandal and dismissal of Joe Paterno.

"I think with what we have both gone through we've learned a lot from each other," said Marrone. "I think it goes back to the genesis of the coaching being the same. We both worked extremely hard and we both paid our dues and there's an appreciation for that and we both have similar philosophies on what we believe in. We're friends and we trust each other."

"We've known each other for a long time," said O'Brien. "Doug and I speak weekly (except for this week). He is one of my best friends. He is a great football coach but most importantly, he is an outstanding person. We talk about many things outside of football and of course, we talk football at times. We trust and respect each other."

quote:

"You'd always see those two together on campus," said Burns. "Out of the whole coaching staff, I think those two were probably the closest because they worked together all the time. Really dear friends."

"He is one of my closest friends," said O'Brien of Marrone. "He's a guy that helped me really break into this profession at Georgia Tech. We carpooled to work together."

Even their wives were close having been college roommates at Boston College. In fact it was Marrone and his wife Helen, who introduced her friend Colleen, to O'Brien after an overtime win over North Carolina while both were coaching at Tech. The new couple eventually married.

I thought y'all were hiring Jeff Stoutland?

I would love to know what an embarrassment of riches feels like.

Stoutland was a priority by the Eagles to remain no matter the new coach. He was a homerun if Alabama could have lured him back, but Marrone is not a bad backup.

Feldman appeared to jump the gun a bit there. Sounds like Stoutland wants to stay in the NFL, possibly in Philly.

I was there for the Shula years and the DuBose years, as well as the Price and Fran debacles.

Trust me when I say, I'm enjoying this with the absolute understanding that it will not last.

I can't remember the last time a NFL head coach went all the day down to NCAA position coach especially that quickly.

Sounds like he is staying in the NFL. Seems like the Eagles leadership wants to keep him whenever they hire a new head coach.

I honestly think Bruce Feldman jumped the gun on reporting Stoutland could be coming to Alabama.

Yep. I spent the entirety of my teenage years watching Alabama wander through the wilderness. I was 13 years old when the decline truly began against UCLA in 2000 and I was about to turn 20 when we hired Saban in January 2007. I know what losing looks like as I spent my earliest years as an actual fan watching my favorite team lose more often than not.

This run has been a blessing and I know it will most likely never be duplicated in my lifetime.

Tennessee definitely has the embarrassment part down to an art. Unfortunately y'all are broke.

Then you saw Dubose, Franchione, and Shula win at least 10 games in a season during their tenure. Some wilderness journies need not be compared to others. Tennessee has been curb-stomped so many times it's almost inhumane treatment. Almost.

Very liberal use of the word. How to go from AFC championship game in your first year to 1-15 in 3 seasons flat.

Hindsight definitely helps cure all ills. But when I was living in the moment, watching Alabama average just over five losses per season from 2000-2006 was a depressing endeavor. I know it pales in comparison to what Tennessee fans are experiencing now, but in 2006 there was no way to know that this would be the world we're living in in 2021.

It is also a literal use of the word as both were head coaches in the NFL last season.

Hey, at least it’s not Craig James’ five dead hookers, am I right?

In the last 48 games, he won fewer than we just did this season. I get y'all didn't have front row seats to the marrone shite show, but it was the worst.

I mean, that's all good and well. I didn't say he was a good NFL head coach. I literally said "NFL head coach".
