To me it looked like the brace was bothering him more than his knee. At least that’s the impression I got.

Agreed.
When he broke out into the open and decided to sprint to the end zone, I half expected to see the brace come apart, a la little Forrest Gump sprinting down the dirt road.
He's doesn't want to wear it but they are making him.
