Does losing a season opener hurt more than other games?

Don't know about you guys, but losing season openers fricking sucks.

I will never forget how pissed I was watching LSU drop one to Wisconsin in 2016.

Bowl losses are bad too, but nothing beats starting the season with a taste like that in your mouth.

We coming, Georgia Southern

It certainly takes the air out of the sails.

I wouldn’t know. We only lose from the middle of October onward.

Was UCLA not an opener for yall? Or did you have someone else before them?

Nope. Hurts less. Almost never a conference game. More time to recover.

It was an opener. I was just referring to the Aggie Season Roller Coaster / October memes.

That game was the most depressing thing I have ever seen. You don’t even care about the season after something like that.

Better to lose early than later. At least that was the conventional wisdom before Alabama started the phenomenon of "backing in" to playoffs.

Hasn't happened since 2001. But I reckon it hurts worse to lose to a tomato can than a legit power 5 team.

Non conference game and plenty of time to recover. But man, starting out like that just sucks. Here is what happened to Bama the last time it happened.

quote:

Alabama scheduled a home-and-home series with UCLA for the season opener in 2000 (away) and 2001 (home). They lost to the Bruins, 35-24, in 2000 and again, 2001, 20-17.

They won a total of 10 games those seasons, which is tied for their lowest two-year win total in the last six decades.

Now this sounds more impressive than it really is because UCLA left such a bad taste in Bama's mouth, that Bama opened up with chumps until Saban got there. Sometimes they would play somebody good in week 2 but never week 1 until Saban.

It's not good, but it doesn't make it break a team.

Losing the last game hurts way worse. It screws up your bowl games.

I actually prefer to lose the season opener if we have to take a loss (if it’s a P5 team).

The alternative is for sunshine pumpers to get unreasonable until brought back to earth in a crushing melt.

Case in point (almost) our second game is Clemson. If we win that for some crazy reason, the pr fictions for our ceiling will go from a reasonable 9-4 to a nutty 10-3 or 11-2.

It may sting a bit more 'cause it's not the way you want the season to start off.

But, IF you're going to lose a game---lose it EARLY. In the polls, you have a better chance to recover (if you're highly ranked at the beginning of the season) and make a far more lasting impression on the CFP committee than if you lose a game late.

As a fan of a team who many years is fighting to just get bowl eligible, it's that game late in the season that could've gotten you bowl eligibility that sucks to lose.

I could absolutely see where it would absolutely suck arse for a team that is National Championship contention to lose an opener if it comes down to a bunch of unbeaten teams. But I'd argue it's better in that situation to get that loss early since voters tend to remember the later season losses if there's an opening for a one loss team.

Not completely true. Quit lying to the public!

Alabubba was caught CHEATING (a usual thing for the Tide) and was penalized with LOSS OF WINS and thus, they were redacted from the OFFICIAL RECORDS and, thus, Alabubba had LOSING SEASONS in the '90's AND 2000's (not to mention in the early '80's, too).

Tell the truth, Viceboy.

No, it isn't impressive at all. That's the first TRUTH you've told.

A loss can quickly put a damper on a team with high expectations. It can also turn up the heat on a coach if he’s entering the season on the hot seat.

LSU has lost only 4 openers in the last 25 years, all to ranked teams. The head coach was fired before the end of the season following two of those losses.

It’s all about expectations. Curly Hallman never won an opener, but lasted 4 years. Les won all his openers for a decade, most of them on the road or at neutral sites, and gets fired a few games into the season after losing his first.

Unless you get blown out or lose to a directional school, an opening week loss never hurts ya. Recency bias is a real thing, losing late is always worse.

If all games are equal(meaning none are lose and you're out of contention type deal) it's easily the roughest.

You wait months building up excitement and come out and its instantly gone the first week? That's brutal. That Michigan game in 2017 was crushing.

This thread is about losing the first game on the field and how it affects the rest of the season. Games taken away by the ncaa years later have no relevance in this discussion, genius. Now, RatRodDawg I think you have the worst case of Bama envy I have ever seen. And I post on the Rant in the midst of a 8 game winning streak vs LSU. Now you tell the truth. Bama kicked the shite out of your Trojans(was it 6 or 7 td's difference?), and denied your UGA championships(in heartbreaking games) and that is what really chaps your arse about Bama isn't it? In reality you are nothing more than a sore loser. It is pretty obvious and pathetic you know. I'll catch you in the morning because I know you old folks go to bed early. And man, you have to be old to be so bitter.
