Does being ranked #1 really matter anymore?

The last two teams ranked #1 have both been embarrassed by unranked Georgia.
Georgia has outscored #1 teams 34-13 this year.
Feels more like a formality at this point.

Being ranked #1 only puts a target on your back.
I think it matters as far as testing your team, because every series you play against some bumfrick random program like UGA, you are getting their best shot.

I would think having dominant pitching, timely hitting and a coach that knows what he is doing matters most. You also have to have lady luck on your side.
I know that's not really an answer to the question you asked though so here goes: being ranked #1 does not matter unless the team you're playing against is scared because they're playing against the #1 team.
