Based on the conversation that LSU football generates on this board, they are the top program in the SEC. Certainly at the top of everyone’s mind.

A coaching staff away from being great. Too much talent to not be great

LSU is the Penn State of the SEC, only with reverse victimization.

They have more accolades than any program not named Alabama or Florida in the SEC

Currently, we have only one top program - Alabama. They've separated themselves from everyone else.

After that, you have that Clemson, Ohio State, Oklahoma, and Georgia tier. I'm not sure if LSU is deserving to be in that group. I'd put them in with the Notre Dame, Penn State, West Virginia, Florida, Texas, Washington, Auburn, etc. crowd.

LSU is a Tier 2 program both today and historically. Whenever you rank programs, you always have to specify whether you're speaking in historical terms or current day terms.

For instance, Nebraska is a Tier 1 program historically speaking. They are not even close to that today.

Clemson is the opposite. They are at best a Tier 2, possibly even Tier 3 program historically speaking... yet they are without a doubt a Tier 1 program at the current time.

HISTORICAL RATINGS:
TIER 1: Alabama, Oklahoma, Notre Dame, Ohio State, USC, Nebraska, Michigan, Texas, Penn State, Tennessee
TIER 2: LSU, Georgia, Auburn, Florida State, Florida, Miami
TIER 3: Clemson, Michigan State, Texas A&M, Arkansas, UCLA, Wisconsin, Washington, Georgia Tech

CURRENT RATINGS:

TIER 1: Alabama, Ohio State, Clemson, Oklahoma
TIER 2: Georgia, Auburn, LSU, Florida State, Notre Dame, Oregon
TIER 3: Stanford, Michigan, Michigan State, Penn State, Wisconsin, TCU, Florida

College Football Data Warehouse has LSU rated as a 9 or 10 in all time rankings. Very good but not great imo
