Does anybody know why there are two bye weeks this year?

I didn't even realize teams had two bye weeks until I was looking at Alabama's schedule this morning. Can anybody explain to me why the NCAA decided to go with two bye weeks this year? Every Power 5 team plays two or three G5 and FCS teams on their schedule in addition to their bye week. Attrition really shouldn't be that big of an issue.

In certain years the calendar dictates that there are fourteen Saturdays to play twelve regular season games thus allowing for two bye weeks. The coaches like years with two bye weeks too plus this gives TV an extra week of football to generate more revenue so it wou,d eventually not surprise anyone to see this become a more permanent thing regardless of the calendar, one day.

It's a calendar thing. In certain years, there are 14 Saturdays to play the 12 regular season games, allowing for 2 bye weeks. In most, there are only 13 weekends.

Exactly. It has to do with the amount of Saturdays between Memorial Day and Thanksgiving. The alternative is to either start a week later or end a week earlier.

We technically have 3 since we played a week before everyone else. 2 is good, the NFL should follow suit.

The NFL did two bye weeks at one time, everyone hated it.

Yeah but that Memorial Day to Thanksgiving rule was abandoned long ago. There are several games now played the week after Thanksgiving and most believe the wait is too long between the conference championship games and Bowl games as it is.

Two weeks off to heal and lick wounds is advantageous for kids these days given the size and speed of the game.
