The NCAA would have to change a rule but I they could do it.

what rule would they have to change? The Big 12 doesn't have divisions, granted they have fewer teams and play a round-robin schedule.

Dump both Mississippi schools, Vandy, and Tennessee or Kentucky.

Who stands to gain/lose the most if we do away with divisions?

The only teams really pushing for it are Auburn and Georgia from what I can see. No one really has anything to gain outside a couple teams restoring "rivalries" no one else really cares about. Many teams stand to lose yearly matchups they have enjoyed for decades if we switch that up or go to a "pod" system. Me personally, I wouldn't want to see an LSU schedule without Alabama, Auburn, Florida, and Ole Miss on it every year. Maybe even State considering we've played 113 times. I acknowledge others may feel differently.

I think the best solution is keeping things the same and going to a 9 game conference schedule. That way, you would play your one permanent cross-division opponent, rotate your two others, and everyone plays everyone within a 3 year block of time instead of 6 as things stand currently.

I know theres been talk of this, as well as lowering the bowl requirement to 5 wins depending on SOS. If this was done I imagine smaller schools (including UK) would be on board with 9 SEC games instead of 8.
Nuts how long it takes to cycle through everyone now

If it were up to me, I'd eliminate half the bowls and require 7 wins but maybe change the rules to allow ALL teams additional practices during bowl season whether they're in a bowl game or not. I know this will never happen, but bowl games have become watered down enough. It used to mean a lot more to qualify for a bowl game. I recall Eli Manning's first year Ole Miss sitting at home at 7-4.

Yeah I get the argument for bowl cutting. When there's a thing called the Bad boy Mowers' Gasparilla bowl one must ask if we've gone too far.
But, bowls wont be cut cause of the money they bring in.
letting a losing team go to a bowl does seem sacrilege but, its a way to get pretty much all schools to agree to 9 conference games. I'd be fine with 9 now, but some would not be due to a harder path to the post season

While the bowls may bring in money for networks and sponsors, I remember reading an article in the past year that showed many of the teams playing in lower-tier bowls actually LOSING money due to all the travel and lodging expenses associated with bowls that are not offset by the bowl payout. The most beneficial thing about qualifying for bowl is the 19-ish additional practices you get, which is why I said I wouldn't have a problem with the NCAA letting all teams have those practices.

Besides, bowl season is good for a school’s brand. When the Central Michigan Chippewas lost around $145,000 on their trip to the 2014 Bahamas Bowl, Athletic Director Dave Heeke told The Detroit News, “Our institution views it as an investment for the exposure and the positive nature of being in the bowl spectrum and being in the postseason.” Plus, an extra game in the middle of the holiday season is a great opportunity for selling merchandise and soliciting donations. With the help of its conference and a fundraising campaign, the#ODUBowlBoundFund, Old Dominion ended up making about $250,000 from what could have been a $600,000 loss on its trip to last year’s Bahamas Bowl.

It is a factor when the divisions are East and West. To me, the shift makes sense geographically and therefore logistically but I really could not care less if it happens or not. In my perfect world, there are 12 schools in the conference and the schedule is round robin with a championship game.

re: Division Shifters: Tell me why I should want Auburn in the East and Missouri in the West
Huh, didn't realize it cost some schools money. Cant say im shocked some of the lower bowls payouts are low.
While the extra practice is nice, theres still an advantage in recruiting a bowl game brings. "Hey look we made it to the post season, we don't completely suck, etc". So some would rather have 4 OOC (mainly cup cakes) with a 6 win minimum than only 3 and keeping the 6 win min.

Its bad for good games and would hurt regular season meaning, but it is what it is. Not sure extra practice would be enough to sway some. I'd be fine with it though

“I know they’re looking at some formats going forward that keep the three main and rotate five and all those things,” Fisher said. “I think it is good for your players, eventually, to play everybody in the conference. I really do believe that…. When you have conferences as big as you have now, that’s kind of the way it goes.”

Likely means they keep the permanent cross divisional opponent, add in a couple of the current division opponents that are viewed as rivalries/competitive, and then rotate the rest
For UK itd probably be: State, Vandy, Tennessee
For LSU itd probably be: Florida, Ole Miss, A&M
or something like that. Teams subject to change obviously.
