Vanderbilt will retain football coach Derek Mason next season, athletics director Malcolm Turner announced Tuesday.

"Look, this has been a disappointing year, without question. But we are going to focus on root causes," Turner told The Tennessean. "We have had 50 years of routine kick-the-can coaching changes without accompanying the fundamental underlying change.

"And out of respect for those who truly support Vanderbilt football and with the focus on building a successful and sustainable football program, this is a cycle that we really need to break."

Mason has a 26-46 record, including 10-37 SEC mark, in six seasons with the Commodores. Despite taking Vanderbilt to bowl games in two of the past three seasons, he has never posted a winning record. This year's team has greatly underachieved with a 2-8 record and 1-6 SEC mark.

Love it for Derek, not sure anyone could do better at Vandy.

absolutely. Vandy will never get recruits they need, they need recruits to know about the education, and not to worry about coaching change.

Intelligent approach to the overall issue. Until Vanderbilt administration gives Mason the facilities needed to attract better players, that cycle will never change.
Turner put his own job on the line with that decision. Takes cajones.

Franklin got to coach against Joker Phillips, Derek Dooley, Mark Richt, SOS, and whoever Mizzou had.Night and day difference.

the administration doesn't care about football. we've known it all along. he just confirmed it so there was no discussion about the issue.

that's why we need to kick them out of the conference and replace them with a school who gives a damn. nothing personal.

A load of crap, and a weak copout excuse

Vandy has a Sociology Major, yes?

Simply go and scour, GA, TX, FL , Ohio & NJ for the 85 best FB Recruits that are smart enough to major in Sociology and Graduate from Vandy and go kick some arse, well at the 8-4 or 9-3 level of arse kicking

Vandy's problem is that they are trying to keep outdated Alums happy by Recruiting suburban players & Private School players that the "Alums feel good about" rather than going out Recruiting the BEST 85 FB Recruits that can also graduate from Vandy

Also Vandy needs to avoid HS FB Recruits from Tenn, they play shytty HS FB in the State compared to GA, FL, TX ,OH, NJ, and other nearby States

Nashville is a better town to Recruit players to than most of those shytty SEC Towns

For what it’s worth, he never actually outright said “Mason will be the coach in 2020.”

He arguably allowed himself some wiggle room if he wants to fire Mason in 2 weeks.

I figured the fact that they could tell recruits you’ll start as a freshman and every game you play will be televised helps them in recruiting. They’ll be going up against the best in the country every week. If you’re NFL material scouts will see you regardless of who you sign with.

Mizzou actually had a better coach back then than they do now.

But let's not forget the legacy Franklin left on the way out. Tried to cover up a rape and convince the victim not to press charges. Got out of town for Penn State before it even hit the papers.
