The Florida Gators pulled off quite a coup in landing former five-star linebacker Brenton Cox from Georgia. Though it seems unlikely that Cox will play in 2019, the Gators are going to do what they can do help him get on the field.

According to Graham Hall of The Gainesville Sun, Florida head coach Dan Mullen said the team is applying for an immediate eligibility waiver. Mullen reportedly believes that Cox has “a good chance of getting one.”

Remember, Luke Ford's waiver when he transferred to Illinois to be near his sick grandparents was denied.

Allegedly, Cox was aggressive with fellow players and coaches (the phrase "took swings" has been floated around the interwebz).

Who knows what is true.

But it wouldn't take much to turn that into a fear for his safety (either retaliation or others instigating).

The way I understand, NCAA is more likely to approve if the school said player is transferring from signs off and basically says they don’t have a problem with it. Also has to be leaving “out of players own control” for lack of a better phrase

Documentation demonstrating that the student-athlete would not have had the opportunity to return to the previous institution’s team for reasons outside the control of the student-athlete.

A written statement from the applicant institution that the student-athlete is in good academic standing and meets all progress-toward-degree requirements at applicant institution.

A written statement from the student-athlete’s previous institution indicating that the previous institution supports the request.

I doubt Cox meets either of those qualifications.

If that clown gets a waiver I'm convinced the entire process consists of an NCAA intern with a magic 8-ball

Well, there's video of Walker slapping him upside the head last year.

If he's eligible this season then the NCAA really doesn't give a frick anymore

Except they apparently do when you are trying to use the old "a family member only has a few months and I'd like to be closer to them" excuse.

I mean I don’t like the double standard, but apparently it matters to the NCAA that it wasn’t immediate family.

The only reason fields got one last year is because he had tom mars as his lawyer (and luke ford didn't have any lawyer I don't believe). Tom Mars now works for the NCAA and is on the other side of thigns.

Not sure if that matters at all but thought it was interesting. There is truly zero reason whatsoever cox should be cleared for this year but who knows.

I expect Georgia to clear him for immediate eligibility.

Why would we not?

He was a 5 star.
He got recruited over (others are better, and better teammates).
He didn't handle it well.

The best way to get 5 stars in is to do nothing to interfere with their nfl dreams if they are unhappy with playing time.

Most will fall in love with the city and university and either earn or wait their spot. The occasional player who "hands the f×xk out of the ball" can take the attitude to the Floridas and Ohio States of the world. More power to them as they wake up to the real world.

Because he kept losing contain vs. MTSU. And LSU. And just about everyone else when he was in the game.

because he's a really damn good player and would immediately be one of hte best players on UF's defense? I would much rather him have to sit out then play as a 3rd year player in 2020.

It’s different if it’s a rival in your division vs Ohio St

He is all potential.

Physical specimen. Everything you want and capable of playing both 3-4 OLB and hand in the dirt in an even front.

But... nothing special at pass rusher (unless you intend to cover him up and call him an interior player on 3rd and long).
Very poor at holding the edge against the run.

He is a project. A maybe for 2+ years down the road.
He is an edge player who isnt special at pass rush or containing the run. At his size, he needs to be dominant on the edge. It is his greatest weakness.

Let him go and start and enjoy watching him learn on the job.
