Was listening to Gary on a podcast the other day and he told this story from 2 years ago.
During the 2017 Iron Bowl, Auburn had the ball inside the Bama 5. Kerryon Johnson lined up for the direct snap, and Gary noticed he was a little deeper than he "should" have been. He also remembered seeing Johnson jumping and throwing passes at a practice he visited a few weeks prior. So Gary says out loud on the CBS broadcast "watch out for the jump pass!" Of course that's the play Auburn ran, resulting in a TD.
Apparently Gus wasn't too happy when he saw the TV copy, and he let Gary know about it. Gus was concerned that if they hadn't run it there, it would have given away the play, and they couldn't use it later on. Gary agreed that Gus had a point and tries not to "call" plays out loud on TV anymore.
The Play
Gary talks about it

Guess what Gary will have at the end of the season that Gus won't. A job.

Are teams allowed to have a guy watch the TV broadcast during the game and relay information to the coaches?
That is to say, if they had lined up and Alabama hadn't even thought about a jump pass, and Gary had called out the play, and then Alabama had jumped offsides and they retried the play, could the guy watching the game on TV have buzzed down to the coaches before the retry and tell them to watch out for the jump pass?

#1 why in the world would a team not be allowed to do this? how could such a restriction even begin to be enforced?
#2 pretty sure Gus meant in a future game

I like Gary but Gus was 100% right to be peeved in this situation.

If Gary notices something he should comment on it. He is a commentator after all. It is literally his job.

As wrong as it is racist.
And if Gary wants to NOT be a total douche, he should stfu when he recognizes a formation or pre-snap cue.

It's not ridiculous to suggest that it may not be allowed. There are rules across multiple sports that restrict certain information from being accessed by coaches or individuals who may be talking to coaches. For example, in Major League Baseball, and other leagues I would imagine, access to the internet by coaches and players during games is forbidden. It is not ridiculous to suggest access to a live broadcast may be similarly forbidden.

He only knew to expect it because he was at practice. That’s not a divine right and if you’re going to spill the beans on playcalls you saw from said practice you should expect to hear about it.

Blackledge is the best color guy and it is not even close

Again how is that going to be enforced? Literally millions of people are watching, what if someone texted Saban at half to relay information like this? Is that okay?

or maybe not allow guys who run their mouth for a living on national tv at your practices

There are other instances, over the years, where color commentators who were given privileged access to walk throughs and practices, shouted out warnings prior to a play ..... one in particular comes to mind where a time out was called by the officials before the play was run and inevitably the coaches in the box got word down to the sideline and the defense prevailed.
It happens and coaches have been less open with broadcast crews beforehand, because of it.
Gus had a legit complaint.

Which I’m sure would be the next step if he starts to get a rep around the league for being loose with what he talks about on the air. Gary altered his behavior accordingly.

if Gus wishes to keep his plays secret, then don't run them in front of the media, run them at closed practices
