Funny. I bet that you'd consider Syndey, Rio, Bangkok, or Barcelona a world city, but Atlanta has a higher GDP than they do.
So? The cities I've listed have a higher GDP than Atlanta, and you've probably never heard of them.

They're having the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, which fricking laughs at either of those cities' temperatures. I'm not putting much past the international clown judges from a practical standpoint of heat.
Downtown Houston on a hot summer day, given urban heat island affect, and comparable humidities to tropical regions... you tell me 105 there is more bearable than whatever Doha is. Cuz 115 in Laredo next to a diesel engine in the oil field ... ain't as bad as just walking around in that fricking hell hole known as Houston.

Everyone has heard of Yokohama. The other two are in China. It's not really surprising that their GDP is so high.

For the Olympics, cultural and historical significance means a lot.

Humidity makes everything so much worse.

If they had a ghetto/gang bang-type Olympics then Jackson would hands down win the selection process. I'm really surprised it lost out to Hotlanta for Freaknic. Atlanta must be policed even less than Jackson.

Memphis is applying for the Olympics btw

Atlanta has the highest concentration of HBCU's in the country, I think. That might explain it.

Nice job on guessing. It's like me saying Westshire is a part of England just because it sounds like it.
And Hyderabad is in India by the way.

Whatever. I don't really care.

Anyone ever heard of Sochie, Russia. I know I haven't and I consider myself a seasoned traveller and geography aficionado. They will host the next Winter Olympics. According to Wiki it is smaller than Nashville.

Money money money money,
Also look at how shitty that whole deal has turned out. Not enough hotels, or even fricking snow. Could very well end up being the biggest disaster in Olympics memory.

Am I the only one who doesn't want to see a five-star failure happen on the part of the IOC? They are so fricking obnoxious and self-absorbed that they really think they are the most important thing in the world when they occur. For Juan Antonio Samaranch to call out the UN for peace during GWII was beyond ludicrous. For them to call a halt to hostilities so their fricking money whoring could occur was too much for me to take. No I am very jaded about anything involving the IOC. Some of you don't remember the Soviet Union but in 91 when it toppled instead of Russia having one vote in the Olympic judging they allowed each commonwealth to have a judge in Olympic competition. So it was impossible for the west to win anything until they made them all combine into to CIS or Commonwealth of Independent States. Then they only were allowed one judge and we started kicking arse again.

A lot of times it takes a failure if huge magnitude to elicit change. And it is not just the IOC's fault in this case. Russian govt has apparrantly been dealing with mob figures (who could have guessed that) and dealing under the table in regards to awarding contracts connected to the winter Olympics there. It is actually fascinating to read about if you have the time to wade through all the Internet articles.

You know those giant hotels and buildings in Dubai and Saudi and Doha that are just empty as frick? Money laundering from the Russian mob.

Haha, is it still considered laundering if you lose all your money?
Or did they own the companies that built the hotels and skyscrapers?

They just had the cash. Those Saudi princes just sort of "will" things to be done, and the money has to fall together somehow.

The Winter Olympics are so much smaller than the Summer Olympics that smaller, resort towns can handle it. Albertville, France. Lillehammer, Norway. Had anyone heard of these towns before the Winter Olympics went there?

No, but it is a fact that this whole thing has been a trainers i for Russia, costing the country I think billions of dollars. Read up on it if you want. There are stories about all the problems all over the Internet.
