It's happening. Too much $$ being left on the table by not doing so.

Several "influential voices in college football" are reportedly prepared to discuss increasing the number of College Football Playoff teams from four to eight.
Nicole Auerbach of The Athletic reported Wednesday that CFP expansion has received a "groundswell of support" with hopes the change can happen before the current contract with ESPN, the event's broadcast partner, expires in 2026.
"It's an appropriate thing to begin thinking about," Big 12 Commissioner Bob Bowlsby told Auerbach.
Although the College Football Playoff has received less criticism than its predecessor, the Bowl Championship Series, it's still created issues. There isn't enough space for a representative from each of the Power Five conferences, and it has left virtually no path to a championship for schools from smaller conferences.

Wisconsin athletic director Barry Alvarez told Auerbach expansion is "inevitable" and said increasing the number of playoff teams would "serve more people."
"I don't know whether we're serving all of our people now, when you have some leagues—our league (the Big Ten) as an example," he said. "Two years in a row, we don't have anyone represented. The Big 12's been the same way. The Pac-12's been the same way."

Aren't we only in year 5 of the 12 year deal for a 4 team playoff?
Who is going to pay off those 8 remaining years and renegotiate this,? just to offer a deal that sounds good to us but is obviously not wanted by everyone?

The SEC commish would have been in on this if a champ from the SEC was left out too
Having 4 spots for 5 major conferences and ND is insane and always has been a dumb idea in theory and in practice

Why wouldn't ESPN want 4 more playoff games to broadcast between top 10 opponents?

And when little kids play musical chairs it would be nice if they have a chair for every kid. That way no one gets their itty bitty feelings hurt.

Can't wait to see the 7 and 8 seeds get steamrolled by Bama and Clemson.

IDK, I love that idea.

I don't know what Alvarez is talking about. The playoffs were never designed to represent each conference. That's not how it works, Barry.

Excellent news, thank you for sharing.

Ok get rid of conference championship games and just have the top 8 teams at the end of the season enter the tournament...
1 vs 8
2 vs 7
3 vs 6
4 vs 5
1 vs 8
2 vs 7
3 vs 6
4 vs 5

No it's not. The entire point of the BCS and now the CFP was to have 1 true champion. It's original intention was not to turn college football into the NFL where a loss here and there doesn't really matter. 4 teams are more than enough to determine a true champion. IMO, the BCS was fine as is. There were only two years (2001 and 2003) where I think the two best teams weren't playing for the national title (should have been Miami/Oregon in 2001 and LSU/USC in 2003). Adding 2 more teams fixes that. If you fall outside the top 4, you didn't do enough in the regular season to earn the right to call yourself "the best." DWI

I sort of agree with you and can see what you’re saying, the more teams you add definitely does dilute the importance of regular season games. How would you feel about a six team playoff with byes for the top two?
