Over the last four years, 37 teams have returned at least 80 percent of their production based on current calculations; 32 of them (86 percent) improved, and 22 (59 percent) improved their adjusted scoring margin per game by at least six points.

Meanwhile, 56 teams returned under 50 percent of their production; 48 of them (86 percent) regressed, 27 (48 percent) by at least a touchdown.

Thus far for 2018, 11 teams return 80 percent or more, and 11 return under 50 percent.

Quick glance at the 'returning production' top 6 (leaving out Michigan State).

2. Kansas 1-11 in 2017
3. Georgia Southern 2-10
4. Baylor 1-11
5. Ball State 2-10
6. Charlotte 1-11

Yeah, I'm going to go ahead and disregard this metric for evaluating teams. Also, each of these teams will likely improve record-wise (simply because they were atrocious last year) and it will further lead to the misconception that this metric actually caused their improvement.

Again where stats mean very little. Schedules and systems are more important than previous years production.

You are the only one stupid enough to put stock in this metric.

Yep. Just like Mississippi State being high.

That same returning talent lost to Matt Luke...

Well, we were 4-7 last season. Chances are pretty good we are going to be considerably better this year.

They break down some of the results over the last 4 years that show there is at least a reason to consider returning production.

It is not a metric of who's the best. It is a metric showing who should improve or decline.

You got have a good coach along with good talent. LSU got talent but Coach O can't do anything with it.

Returning the same scrubs from last year's team does not necessarily mean they're going to win more ball games.

I recall an article a few years ago that found no correlation between returning starters and onfield production. If I remember correctly, the only position group where returning talent seemed to be an indicator of onfield improvements was the OL, which takes more time to develop and unit cohesion with increased # of starts/games played was a benefit.
