No because they’re not a conference champion.

Yep, I missed one. Thanks for the correction. The point is that the SEC and B1G would dominate the list. Then the ACC and then everyone else with a single seat at the table nearly every season.

Last year would’ve looked like:

1. Alabama
2. Clemson
3. Ohio St.
4. Oklahoma
5. Cincinnati
6. Coastal Carolina
7. Notre Dame
8. Texas A&M
9. Florida
10. Georgia
11. Iowa St.
12. Indiana

Rd 1:
Indiana @ Cincinnati
Iowa St. @ Coastal Carolina
Georgia @ Notre Dame
Florida @ Texas A&M

Rd2:
Peach Bowl - Bama vs. Iowa St.
Orange Bowl - Clemson vs. Georgia
Cotton Bowl - Ohio St. vs. Texas A&M
Fiesta Bowl - Oklahoma vs. Cincinnati

Rd3:
Sugar Bowl - Bama vs. Georgia
Rose Bowl - Cincinnati vs. Texas A&M

CFPNCG:
Texas A&M vs. Georgia

Giving more fans of mores schools a reason to care about what happens to their team throughout the year is absolutely good for the sport. This isn't even questionable.

That is the fantasy.

When they lose in the first round, how is going to drum up any more excitment for the final 4 than we have now?

It's not. Just because someone's team made it in as the #12 seed, it's not going to make them any more interested in the final games after they lose.

It's going to be #5 vs #12 or whatever, and it will draw a little extra attention at first, but then it's going to be just like a bowl game would be between the 2 after a few years.

Fool's Gold.

College Football Playoff (and BCS) Ratings History

You can see this as fact here. Viewership since the playoffs have started has declined and is equal to or worse than the BCS. The other bowl games have suffered the same fate, viewership has declined after an initial bump.

At the end of the day, you are either the kind of person who watches or you don't. And much like nascar, they are starting to do things that are going to eat away at their base viewership. The regular season will start to mean less, and people will watch less.

The hell it isn't. 80% of the teams in the FBS still won't sniff the playoffs in your lifetime.

Why even have bowls at this point

What's new there? It's only a dang game and is meaningless right but let's look at why bowls might still be played.

I don't know, maybe because people like football? Is that not enough reason alone? If not, here are some benefits:

The team gets rewarded for a good season with travel, have outings, get Bowl prizes, play in a different venue, play a new opponent, make some money, get extra practices, showcase some new younger talent to create excitement for next year.

This won't kill bowls, they will still have their place.

So now Alabama and Clemson will play for the title the day before the super bowl? That how that works?

Only if Sunday and Monday are swapped on the calendar.

Yep, and barring some freak circumstances, I expect we'll see the same familiar teams at the end.

Yeah, but the back end of the 12 will be a revolving door of 15-20 different teams. Alabama, Clemson, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Notre Dame, and Georgia will get in pretty much every year for the foreseeable future. Then the Pac-12 champ, the highest ranked G-5 team, and some combination of 4 other teams that are usually in the top 25. It basically just expands the current pool of 5-6 annual playoff contenders to 20-25 while making sure the Pac-12 gets their participation trophy and some G-5 team that played a schedule of nobodies gets a chance to wear a pair of big boy pants.

So when are they going to start the first round? a week or so after conference championships? 12 teams is 4 rounds, they already cant play the final on saturdays or sundays because of NFL playoffs.

going to be a shite show imo

I don't like the idea of having byes, but that's my only complaint.

Current system is in place until '25. None of this has even been approved yet. It's just 'proposed' by the working group. Commissioners and Presidents could theoretically squash it. Not that they would.

I think they're looking at two weeks after Championship Saturday. Assuming they're able to start this in 2023 (the absolute earliest they could do it), the first round will be played on December 16. That would mean the Quarterfinals will be played on Monday, January 1, 2024.

"Might just be a ploy to allow ND or OU to win a playoff game"

Nope - it'll take a lot more than that!
