Heard on ESPN radio this morning that since the start of the college playoff system, universities have paid a total of $500 million in coaches buyouts. Hell, LSU just paid Orgeron $17 million not to coach.

A&M's would be almost 1/6 of that.

Oof.

The 5 coaches who have been fired already this season + Harsin will receive less buyout money combined than Jimbo would.

You could fire Dabo and Saban and you'd pay less combined than Jimbo stands to get if he were fired.

I just looked it up and that isn't true.
quote:

Should Clemson part ways with Swinney, the Clemson coach has a $64 million buyout in 2022 and 2023. It drops to $60 million in 2024 and 2025 and then $57 million in 2026. Starting in 2027 and running through the rest of the contract it will be the remaining total compensation (base + supplemental + licensing).

quote:

Should that happen, Alabama would owe Saban the total of his base salary plus his talent fee for the next 48 months of his contract, or for the full remainder of the deal if he is fired closer to the end.

At Tennessee we are professionals at paying worthless coaches millions of dollars to leave.

Hopefully, LSU will not have to worry about that.

The money is there to cover these buyouts and more. These numbers are always stated with zero context. Go look at the P&L of the Athletic Departments paying out these “absurd” buy outs. It’s market dictated because programs are cash rich af

Your words are wasted here. You're 100% right, of course. But nobody here cares about facts or context.

Most of the programs themselves don't pay the buyouts.

Whatever makes you feel better about paying $100M for perpetual 8-4 seasons while you crow during the off-season pretending to be an elite program I guess

When did these ridiculous buyout clauses start getting added to contracts? What agent first screwed some dumb AD in contract negotiations? Then all the rest of the dumb ADs fell in line. Obviously the salaries have drastically increased in the past 20 years so the buyout numbers increased as well, but did coaches in the 70s and 80s have these clauses that paid them their entire contract values if they sucked coaching and were asked to leave?

It's there for the reading.

Usually boosters are paying the bulk of salaries and buyouts through a foundation.

Most of the money generated through the football program is distributed throughout the rest of the athletic department and the school itself.

Why does the “for cause” clause not include sucking on the field? What other job contract on the planet protects an employee who sucks at their job????
