College Baseball NIL thoughts

Is it now possible for players to make more in college than the minors? NIL could be HUGE for this sport

I thought about this earlier. Why would someone go sit for years in the minors when they could come spend 3-4 at one of the elite colleges and get treated like a king and still get paid.
I think baseball benefits the most from this for sure.

It'll definitely help the schools with larger followings like State, Arkansas, Ole Miss and LSU. I'm not entirely certain how it would affect the other schools however. Seems like you need a built in follower base to make money off of NIL.

Only problem is most college baseball players may not be that recognizable to the casual fan

For the guys who aren't getting a fat bonus when drafted, this makes a lot of sense. Especially if you're on schollie. The room & board + NIL $ could make financial sense to stay in college as long as possible.
Also, you get to the bigs more quickly by going to college.

There are no “casual” college baseball fans. State players and Arky for sure will make some $$$

Stop it. Of course, there are.

At State, Arkansas, LSU, and Ole Miss, they are. They’re just as popular as some of the big football players, at least at State.

This actually isn’t a bad read, title “ Will new rules make college athletes instant millionaires? Not so fast…”

I think some athletes will make money, a lot, but the fact only like 98% of athletes go pro, I doubt it, athletes will make more than an minors baseball player, a mls player, a WNBA player, a USWNT player? In a sport that isn’t a cash cow like football? I think people are overestimating how much money a kid that will never go pro but is good in college will make, or maybe I’m underestimating, will be fun to see what happens

If I was standing in line next to Max Johnson I wouldn’t even know it.
Put me next to Dylan Crews and I’d try to strike up a conversation.
Football players wear helmets. They aren’t easily recognizable.

If 2 women's basketball players can get sponsored by Boost Mobile, I fully expect Rowdey Jordan to have a conditioner/shampoo deal by Monday.

It’s gonna be absolutely massive for a school like LSU.
I’m worried it might reduce parity though by causing even more top players that usually wouldn’t stay/go to college at all to go, but only to like the top 10 or 15 schools

Ok, now what if you were standing next to Joe Burrow? Or even Derek Stingley?
And on the opposite end what if you were next to Cade Doughty? Would you know?
It’s less about the helmet and more about how well known the person is IMO

Of course this is going to happen. But the sport will grow MASSIVELY with more first round picks playing

Highly unlikely. Guys you aren't getting to campus aren't coming because of $M signing bonus. A few $100 handshakes isn't going to mean much.

That is the root problem with this, but also with the inept NCAA basically encouraging the same behavior in a different fashion as it's been for years now.
It's just formalized going forward.

Mississippi State fans spend more money on baseball merch than football merch. That’s a fact

The potential is there but the reality is that even in college (I think more will stay for 4 years than is already staying), these guys won't make more than they would playing for a minor league team.
There may be a couple of guys (maybe 2 guys on great teams) who will do better than in the minors but it won't be more than that.

But the athletes aren't going to be allowed to put the school's logo or anything on merchandise. I'm not sure people would be that interested in buying something with just a person's initial logo on it even if he is associated with the school. The branding of the school is what makes everyone fans.
Guess we'll see, lots of questions still to be answered.

The guys signing for millions or hundreds of thousands will still go. But the guys on the cusp could live a much more comfortable lifestyle in college than as a poor minor leaguer.

According to The Athletic, the average player salary for a minor league player was $6,000 in Single-A, $9,350 in Double-A and $15,000 in Triple-A in 2018. The aforementioned pay bump will increase player pay at least a little bit.
