12 coaches have been both players and coaches in the TSIO:
Jennings B Whitworth, Bear Bryant, Ray Perkins, Mike Dubose, Mike Shula, John Barnhill, Harvey Robinson, Bowden Wyatt, Bill Battle, Johnny Majors, Phil Fulmer, and Jeremy Pruitt
Also crazy that Heupel and Debeor grew up 90 miles from each other in South Dakota and have known of each other since highschool.

That's cool. Thanks for posting
Didn't know this either. Also pretty cool. That said, I was watching the FCS ranking release and it had the usual suspects for the most part. 5 of the top 10 are from Montana or the Dakotas. Kind of insane how dominant those schools have become for so long at that level. Has to be limited in-state top end talent, even for FCS. And even harder to recruit out of state to those areas. Great football coaches at the FCS top levels.

yeah read some article where Debeor talked about how he spent a week with Heupel at OU in the mid 2000s talking about how offense works at the power 5 level.

Looking at that list, we should make it a universal rule that we never hire another Alabama player to coach.

A couple Bama players on that list were leading the Bama program in its two darkest periods all time.

Not to take anything away from the schools in the northern plains, but you also have to consider that other FCS schools who made significant investments in coaching and recruiting were also perennial contenders before making the jump to FBS.
App State, Georgia Southern and James Madison were all dominant in FCS before moving up.

That is indeed pretty wild.

The northern plains have become to the FCS what the Southeast is to the FBS. Dominant local players up there who are (let’s face it) mainly white or Native American admixture, in what is traditionally a hotbed for ice hockey. But there’s only so many schools who will focus on ice hockey at a national level, so football will still be king even up north. You don’t get the same types of players up there but with the right coaching, they are very successful.
